Football... preparing for next season - Wednesday, October 11, 2006 10:37 PM
I play highschool football, it's pretty easy to see that I'm a linebacker from my username. During our season we really don't lift that much and we run about once a week, the varisty runs twice and lifts twice. Well right now I'm a junior who starts at the JV middle linebacker. The thing is, I've played football all my life and ever since I hit highschool, I lost all my starting jobs, granted I switch positions freshman year because I trained hard and went from playing defensive tackle to linebacker, I still haven't had much success getting onto the field. I'm 5'8", maybe 5'9" now, and I'm 190 pounds.
 
40 Time - 4.9 (Rounded/estimated, our coaches did it so I'm not sure how accurate it is)
Bench Max - 245 (at my best, I tried to do 225 a month ago and couldn't)
Squat Max - 295 (I have tendonitis in both of my shoudlers and knees, it just affects my knees more)
 
I don't so much want to play college football, I do, but I know because of my size I won't, but I want to start my senior year. I desperately need to increase my leg strength and my overall strength and explosivness. If anyone knew anything that could help me increase my squat as much as possible (I'd like to get it up past 400 close to 500 but I know that won't happen in less than a year) it'd be greatly appreciated. If at all possible I want to be somewhere around...

40 Time - 4.6/4.7
Bench Max - 300+
Squat Max - 400+

Oh I also have a bottle of Gakic I have rarely used because it was too difficult to take during school, but I plan on using it during the offseason because at least with conditioning I did notice quite a bit of difference. I keep forgetting stuff... I also plan to enter a charity boxing event around March/April, if I could do anything in conjunction with this to get me ready for that I'd also love it, thank you.

squat should be way higher, mines too low too, but i can power clean, what is your clean?

Torn Meniscus (twice) below is much lower now
Power Clean: 265lbs
Bench: 255lbs
Squat: 325lbs
Deadlift: 425lbs

Linebacker53.. work on ur speed.. speed kills.. if ur 5'9, 190 lbs, be a safety, like a strong safety.. get down to like a 4.6 40 and u could probably do it.. i was 5'9 160 lbs in high school and ran a 4.47 and started at corner and reciever.. if u got the speed, u'll get on the field one way or another.. and if ur team only works out once a week, take the initiative and do it on ur own.. to keep my speed and get faster in the off season, i ran track.. not to compete or cuz i liked running but it helped me get faster and kept me in shape for the upcoming football season..

Unless you are really overweight, lowering you 40 time by more than .2 is going to be extremely difficult. Speed can be developed, but it is more geneitic than anything I have ever seen. Since you are still young, you have a good chance to get faster and .2 is a good improvement, if you can get a legit 4.7. A lot of people think you need a 4.5 to be fast, but a legit 4.5 is a real d-1 athelete. Most d2 or d3 speed guys would be lucky to break 4.7 and linemen around 5.5. 4.9 is actually decent for a hs linebacker, but we all know how accurate coaches times are.
 
Anyway, the big thing I would do is plyometrics. Lots of box jumps and explosive exercises. Stick to compund movements for lifting. Bench, squats, deadlifts, cleans. The way to get faster is run. Work on conditioning by doing sets of 110's.

A good way to help your sqaut is by doing box squat i can really only parallel squat 225 right now because unfotunitly i have a hernia so i cant be pushing to much but i squated 335 box squat like 4 days ago... i also am a linebacker for my football team but unfortunitly for me again this is going to be only my third year and the other kid in fron of me is a monster he sqauts like 345 reps and the starting mlb is going to b a 2 year strater and the coaches tend to play favorites thankfully the coaches r starting to notice me .... but try the box squat if u can i think it may help alot.

Thanks for all the replies to those who did. I feel faster, our team has been doing a lot of core exercises as opposed to the Jumpstretch band work we've been doing the last couple of years and just joking running down my driveway I feel light, I feel faster but I also don't know if that's not just from the strain of my first full 10 game season I've ever been in since 7th grade I've missed at least 3 games a year due to injury. Well we're getting close to our maxes and we've lowered the reps quite a bit in the build up to going to a higher reppage again if that's even a word.

Bench
4 reps of 205
2 reps of 225
1 rep of 245, I needed help on the last couple of inches but even on those I basically got them myself

Squat
4 reps of 225
2 reps of 275
1 rep of 315, again I needed a little bit of help getting up but for the most part I got it, when we max in two weeks I should get both of those last two, maybe a little bit more on the bench

Powerclean (My vice)
135 x 8 (Waaaaaaaay too easy)
155 x 6 (Waaaay to easy again)
185 x 4
 
The debate we have in our locker room is whether or not when you clean it if you should basically front squat it so when you max when you actually go down you can come up, or if you max is really all you can throw up, my upper body dominates my lower body, so if I don't squat after catching the clean, I can rep 185 about 6 times easy, maybe 8 if it's my first set, but when I move up to 205 it gets too much to just reverse curl basically up and I'm forced to go down, at which point I lose it because 1.) my form is not perfect and/or 2.) my legs are not strong enough to catch something so heavy AND come up with it, so I've begun going down so my clean max can go up, but right now if I had to guess, my clean max is only 205, which is very bad.
 
But back to the reason I decided to check on this board again, I've recently began to want to go all out, I've been researching and talking to my parents about getting HGH. I'm 17 on Feb. 8th so I don't think I'm done growing yet but it's either now or never to try it, does HGH actually increase your height and body mass? I'm not so worried about mass as I am about height, right now I'm 5'8" even (I finally measured) and I'm 196 pounds, but I look rather lean for being that heavy because my upper body is completely disporportioned to my lower body, my calves are thick but thin for my size if that makes sense, but my biceps are rather large as is my chest, and my waist is only 34 inches which I consider good because my friend who is about 6'3" 170 some pounds and starts WR/S for our team wears the same pants size in width. But my main concern is height, if I could gain about 2 inches and be 5'10 or even 5'11 and if miracles could happen be 6'0, I would be thrilled but is there anyone who has taken HGH that could tell me if it works, side effects, etc etc?

DUDE...NO HGH. you don't know what you're getting yourself into...stick to creatine, protein, fish oil, multi vitamin, and a preworkout supp like NO Xplode or Superpump. Also, eat A TON. By a ton, i mean 4500 cals+ per day. Have a 20-30-50 ratio of fat-protein-carbs. Since you're not bodybuilding, just do a dirty bulk and make sure you get all of these cals in. If youre feeling adventurous you could give E-bol or x-factor a try replacing both creatine and a preworkout supp, of course.

In terms of lifting: partials and forced reps are the keys to success when training for power. Work in partials for one set doing a heavier weight than you can press, but only doing half the motion. This will shock your body into being able to lift more weight. Forced reps are a great way to grow, but use them sparingly, like once or twice per excercise. JUST KEEP EATING! Make sure to get in anti-oxidants to help curb free radical damage, because you will be training HARD.

btw: effects of hgh include: gyno (man boobs), carpal tunnel, diabetes, hypertension, thyroid problems (makes you fat and tired), and heart failure.

HGH will not make you taller unless you are deficient in HGH and should see a doctor to get it administered if you are. Too much HGH will produce negitive side effects i.e. enlarged organs, man boobs, and other long term health defects. Never take HGH without consulting a profesional. There is a reason why it is illegal.
