Foot Roll

Not sure if this question belongs in this forum or not, but figured this might be the best place to post it. I've been lifting on and off for several years now, and have always had a problem with my feet tending to roll outwards when doing lower body excercises such as squats and calf raises. My questions are: 1. Does anyone know how to prevent this from happening, and 2. Could it lead to possible injury or strain? Any help would be greatly appreciated because this really annoys the hell out of me. I always feel as if I have crappy technique even though I know that all other aspects of my lift technique are great.

1) See a podiatrist and get foot inserts. They will assess the alignment of your feet and design an insert that will help your feet distribute pressure evenly across the base. People with high arches or those that are flat-footed have similar problems when theyre squatting etc - their feet either roll out or in. 2) Injury? maybe. Depends on how bad it is. the forces transmitted through your legs when squatting should be distribted in an even fashion, with forces on both aspects (outer and inner) of the thighs, calves and ankles being the same/similar. with people with rolling feet (me included - mine roll in), the pressure distribution isnt even. This makes you more susceptible to injury than someone who has the right 'alignment' Most of it comes down to genetics, the way you bones are aligned. but the stablility of the ankle and feet also play a big part in that so get shoe inserts and ask the podiatrist about maybe havinv to strap you ankles before a squat session if its really bad. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information, I had thought about inserts before, but was never sure if they corrected the roll (never really looked into). Will definitely start with those and see if that corrects the problem.
