Fish Oil -Take It or Not? - Wednesday, June 18, 2003 1:26 PM
Heard of a Supplement Called Fish Oil?

Some questions:

  • Is this a supplement worth taking?
  • Is there a specific need that one would need to take it?
  • Does it do anything for the BB in general or is it just a healthy supplement to take for the fitness conscious minded person?
  • Isn' t a good amount of fish oil in my EFA Complex?
  • What am I looking for in a fish oil supplement? (ingredients)

We have a resident expert lurking somewhere. I' m no expert myself. But I know that this type of supplement doesn' t get the hype that maybe it should.

What do you think?

  • Is this a supplement worth taking?

    Definately.

  • Is there a specific need that one would need to take it?

Using flax gives you w-3 fatty acids, which the body can convert to EPA/DHA for use.

Using fish oils gives you EPA/DHA directly.

  • Does it do anything for the BB in general or is it just a healthy supplement to take for the fitness conscious minded person?

    Yes to both.

The benefits would take take me ages to recell off my head. Tomorrow i' ll dig up some stuff for you.

  • Isn' t a good amount of fish oil in my EFA Complex?

Depends if your " EFA complex" includes " fish oil" :)

  • What am I looking for in a fish oil supplement? (ingredients)

High EPA/DHA content.

According to the one I' m taking now.. 3 capsules daily with a meal..

DHA: 138mg
EPA: 216mg

Should suffice as ' fish oil' according to the above.

3 daily

Those amounts are above are in a daily serving.. total.. which is 3 capsules taken with a meal.

increases leptin sensitivity

Isn' t leptin or the levels of that.. what makes me so hungry? I remember an e-mail when I asked why I was so hungry. Did you not say because my leptin levels were low?

I could be wrong as I don' t have the e-mail in front of me.

EPA/DHA are potent ligands of the PPARs. More specifically, agonises (binds and does stuff) the PPARalpha (which promotes fat oxidisation etc..) and antagonises (binds and stops other stuff binding) the PPARgamma (which is responsible for fat storage and other stuff).

Alter gene transcription, which can effect the permeability of the blood brain barrier to leptin (i.e. What Steve said).

Together, these can essentially aid you in making gains in LBM and lower your setpoint (a bit).

Increase that to about 6-10 if you can afford it. if you' re controlling calories, make amendments in your dietary fat allocation elsewhere so they fit.

Not itself, no. but it has control over the hormones responsible for this effect (ghrelin for hunger, NPY for carb cravings - and another hormone that makes you crave fat, which i' ve forgotten the name of. Lots others too, probably).
