Fish Oil or Flaxseed OIl - Tuesday, October 20, 2009 10:55 PM ( #1 )
Just a matter of some feedback on these 2 oil brands. Would you guys use Fish OIl or Flaxseed oil as your supplement and why? I'm bulking and would like to know which is more useful and beneficial.

Both are incomplete.  EFAs include LNA (alpha-linolenic, omega-3) and LA (linoleic, omega-6).  Fish oil and flax only contain LNA.  You might get a fair amount of LA already from your diet, but the suggested ratio of LA:LNA is 3:1 or 4:1, so it can't hurt to get some LA in your supplement as well.

Udo's Choice is a damn fine supplement, though a bit expensive.

Btw I'm no expert on EFAs, so if I'm getting something wrong here, someone say something.

I don't think fish oil is incomplete.  Fish oil contains both EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids.

Flaxseed oil is incomplete because it only contains ALA, which the body must convert to both EPA and DHA.  And that conversion is very inefficient.

I take a fish oil supplement for the EPA and DHA and include plenty of flaxseed meal and walnuts in my diet for the ALA.  Make sure your fish oil is molecularly distilled, which offers a purer and higher quality product.

Fish oil, from cold water oceans contain a solid EFA spectrum.  You should be looking for "wild" on the bottle.  You would need to take more flax oil than fish to get the same benefits, but I would recommend using ground flax seeds in your foods as well as using the fish oil products.  Udo's Oil makes good products, but some others are good as well.

You're supposed to have the correct ratio of omega-6 to omega-3, which is 2:1.  An over-abundance of omega-6 fatty acids via vegetable oils like corn, soy, peanut, etc. is mostly what is wrong with the standard American diet.  On top of HFCS, trans fats, refined flour, processed foods and sugar.

Omega-6 fatty acids are pro-inflammatory.  But they are still needed, as they are involved in the inflammation response of the body during injury, disease or dysfunction.  In contrast, omega-3s are anti-inflammatory.  Too much omega-6 and not enough omega-3 causes the inflammation response to go unchecked, leading to chronic inflammation which then leads to degenerative diseases and dysfunction over time.

Get as many Omega 3's as you can, because Omega 6's are almost everywhere and maintaining the 2:1 ratio is very difficult without effort.  Most probably run 4:1 or higher.
