So me and some of the guys I work with got together, and we're going to get some handpads and start fighting eachother.  The way it's going to work is this, the two fighters pay <x> each and the winner takes all, anyone watching can bet, but if they win they get back what they bet +80%, the other 20% goes to the winner.  One of the managers overheard a bunch of us talking about it and told us it was illegal.  My question is, is it really illegal if we all consent to it because I was kind of looking forward to the endurance I'll get out of it, along with the money.

So if we weren't betting it wouldn't be illegal?  The only reason I'm worried is one of my managers heard us talking about it and he's the type to report it to the police.

And yes David, it's like a fight club.

Any association for illegal fight is against the law either.

Well we were going to do it in this place in the woods that was paved, I have a wrestling mat in my basement so we were going to put that there, it's about 2 inches thick so it should have worked nicely.  However since this is pretty illegal and the paved area is about 5 feet from a residential street I don't think it would be wise to have 10-15 people there.

Maybe what we can do is clear out an area in the middle of the woods somewhere, and put down some concrete, or asphalt and voer it with the mat.  That's a pretty good idea actually, then we could put tables and benches up and stuff.

we used to have a fight club, it was backyard boxing and we bet money on it. I never knew how much boxing hurt especially in the ribs. It was intense, got my adrendaline going but we shut it down when it got to big and too many random people or coming and plus some guy got a permanent twisted nose.

Yeh, we don't want it to be higher than 20 people, and personally if it gets any higher than that I'm not going to do it anymore, if we even start.  As far as the pain goes, I know how it feels, I used to box a bit, and have been in a lot of fights, so I'm not too worried about that.

David, we're all between 17-25.

Fighting and MMA (something you'd be doing at an amateur, most likely untrained level) are governed by athletic commissions. You can get into serious trouble staging any kind of performance, especially when money and spectators are involved because it legitimizes your intent to compete for profit.

If you are betting on unsanctioned fights, that is 100% illegal in California. It'd be the equivalent of running a poker website on servers in California.

To be honest though, I think the idea is badass and if you posted videos on youTube, I'd be all over it.

Are you lookin at the money or adrenaline rush out of this? Cause if you just want the rush then ditch the betting idea and just get a couple of friends and keep it small. It is still illegal so I'm not exactly encouraging it, but with a smaller group it would be easier to keep it under wraps and not have the police called...

I did it at a legally sanctioned one. Please, if you have no formal training and are not at least a red belt or equivilant: don't. Especially if you weigh over 190lbs. I got my ass kicked my second match by a 230lb, 5'10 asian Jeet Kune Do blackbelt. Let us just say it did not end well against my no-belt, self taught Jiu-Jitsu and Hapkido ass.

Whatever happens, make sure you continue to break the first rule of Fight Club because this is interesting.

haha.

Seriously though I was raised by over sensitive "we've been sued" parents. granted they were indeed sued I was made very aware to be careful of what I did if for no other reason to avoid lawsuits.

A fight club is a very cool idea. It is illegal but I sped all the way home. The only thing I'd worry about is someone getting really hurt and you getting screwed by a personal injury attorney.

This is illegal, why do you have to do illegal stuff ??
The same thing might happen with you...do you want to be another Robert Paulson....

Why don't you just try some karate, or some LEGAL boxing ???

anyways...this is your life...get arrested, then you won't be able to travel anywhere....that would be a good thing

I like fighting with my mates but most of them don't fight any more which sucks but I'd say find a place where it is regulated and legal if I was you, unless you don't care about breaking the law and the punishment you may get from it, then go for it.
