Fats after workout - Wednesday, April 22, 2009 8:22 AM ( #1 )
Should I keep my post workout meal low in fat or should I just have normal fat in there.  Right now I put 2 spoon fulls of natural pb in w/ my whole fat yogurt, and sometimes I have a chicken thigh, too.  Is that too much fat or am I good.  I also have a scoop of whey and some strawberries in the yogurt and maybe a can of tuna on the side.

I know this goes against the grain of this site, but I don't recommend low fat meals at any time, including PWO.  My fat at this time usually comes in the form of whole milk, maybe an avacado as well.

I use coconut oil in my post-workout shake.  Coconut oil is a medium-chain triglyceride, therefore your body does not need to use bile or any enzymes to process it.  Coconut oil is used by your body for energy, in that way it acts like a carbohydrate.  Coconut oil also speeds the uptake of fat-soluble vitamins and minerals.

I put it in my shakes, cook with it, use it like butter, sometimes I even just take a spoonful of it right out of the container.

I usually buy Jarrow Formula's extra virgin and cold pressed version from vitacost.com.  It's like $13 bucks for 32 ounces.  Usually lasts me a month or two.

You can get any brand though, as long as it's extra virgin and cold pressed, and it'll be all the same.

Would there be any negative reasons to use it preworkout? I was thinking of getting some to go with my Xtend.

Nope, no negatives to using it pre-workout.  I do that as well.  I usually have a tablespoon slathered on a slice of bread right before I lift.

Coconut oil is quickly digested and uses minimal energy in the process of it being digested.

From what I know, fat can slow down your digestion of protein, which is not good PWO.
