i know everyone asks about hs football but i really need this ok over the summer im planning to get as big as possible and keep my speed. so... im gonna work w/ my dad doing concrete and construction till about 2-4 and then workout everynight at about 5 or 6. im gonna do sprints and streching either b4 or after. does this seem alright? and if not what could i do to make it better? im looking to play safety and i weigh about 140lbs and i lift about 180 on bench my max is 195. i dunno how much i can squat i have a pulled muscle from track. but im pretty strong for my size. I take protein shakes 30 mins after i workout and i eat a big meal b4 i workout. thanks, taytay

As a safety, your number one concern should be speed, so I would place most of the focus on that.

What grade are you in/playing? You are right in gaining weight if you are in hs. A 140lb safety will get run over.

i was a freshman this year i played reciever but i cant catch and i dont like the fact that i dont get to nail people. everyones around my size as freshman i think i am stronger in da weightroom than everyone on my team than 3-4 people. im just too small but ive gained about 30 lbs since last year around this time using just a gnc mega whey protein shake. my 40 time is like 4.8 i think im the fastest on da team but that was a year ago im sure im faster than that

Do your sprints after your workout. The best way to increase your speed. You could also do interval training where you sprint for a set time then jog, rinse and repeat. for highschool as a sophmore 4.8 isnt too bad. You def. want to work on that tho. Honestly I would worry more about your speed, the wieght will come as you grow and get older. Safteys are pretty much more physical corner backs. Dont get so overwhelmed with your gaining, make sure you get good protein from regular food, I.E. chicken/steak/fish and not just from the shakes. Fat is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, make sure your getting the good kind. peanut butter is a great source. anyway, best of luck to you.

Safteys are pretty much more physical corner backs. i definitley agree with that. i'm not trying to hurt your feelings but 4.8 is not that fast(i ran a 4.43, and the fastest on the team ran 4.35 i think 4.3 something anyway), if your the fastest on your team running a 4.8 your teams in alot of trouble. rippedchick is right that being 140 and saftey you are going to get run over, mostly by the bigger backs. i suggest that since your only going to be a soph. that you just keep in shape this summer, dont try to gain to much weight right now, and just work on your speed. i imagine that practice is starting right around the corner and if you do 2-a-days you will struggle to put on weight. just wait until the season ends and then try and gain as much weight as possible up til spring practice.

don't plan on gainging 10-20 pounds in a summer without slowing down your speed. Also being a safty is all about speed, if you have a perfect form when takling (sp?) then you can bring anyone down

Now it's to the point in pre season where if I were you I would just focus on getting faster and maintaining the strength I have and then after the season start aggressively bulking so you'll have time to build your speed back before next season.

Whoa whoa whoa here guys, hold your toungues. Run over at 140 at safety? Hes only gonna be a sophmore. I was a freshman this year, mostly playing at 130. Had a dominating year at CB, and WR. If he wants to get big, yeah eat a ton and lift. But don't so much worry about speed at safety. As long as you have good instincts you should be set there. I'm sure your coaches tell you guys the same things they tell us, whatever you do, don't get beat deep. So its not so much speed, but your agility should be a big deal. I'd say go half and half, lifting with sprints. If you love football as much as me, and your starting this early, trust me you'll be ready next year to play JV.

come on man Speed is everything as a safety 140 is tiny out safety at my school was a ripped 165 if someone get's loose a big half back 185 190 he is goin to dominate a little safety at 140 and yes you may have but freshman teams don't pass that much most high school teams are mostly run teams anyway ORIGINAL: dylan431 Whoa whoa whoa here guys, hold your toungues. I guess I should make a disclaimer that my football advice is directed at varsity and college players in very competitive, agressive, intense training. Some of it would be bad advise for a younger player or one who does not train as intensly or agressively.

What is your injury that you can't squat? The first thing is you need to address this, because if you injured it sprinting, you need to rehab it right away. Sprinting hard on it will prolong the injury and will turn into problems throughout your career. I know, I've worked with may college athletes who have had nagging injuries that either red shirt them for the year or stop them from training hard and this kills them on the field. It all starts right now.
"Z Last Book You'll Ever Need On Strength Training" by Todd E. Bostrom What Bill Kazmaier had to say: “This book will give you all you need to plan yourquest for greater strength. Follow the guidelines of proven trainingmethodology a
