Exercise During Pregnancy - Friday, April 09, 2004 8:52 AM ( #1 )

Experts cite many potential benefits of regular exercise during
pregnancy: general well-being throughout the pregnancy, easier
labor, fewer childbirth complications, quicker return to
pre-pregnancy weight.

Each woman’s pregnancy is unique, so the most important step is
to consult your doctor about acceptable levels of activity for
you. Here are some additional guidelines:

- Low-impact activities such as walking and swimming are best.
- Avoid contact sports (e.g., soccer) and activities that pose
the risk of falling (e.g., skiing).
- Keep your exercise heart rate under 140 beats per minute.
- It may be possible to continue strength training, although your
doctor may recommend reducing the amount of weights and choosing
some different exercises.

Above all, pay attention to your body; if you’re experiencing
pain, discomfort or shortness of breath, stop. Since your body
continues to change throughout pregnancy, you may need to
re-evaluate and alter your fitness routine several times.

RE: Exercise During Pregnancy - Friday, April 09, 2004 10:15 AM ( #2 )
Thanks for posting this Marc. I guess my biggest concern is with that 140 HR number. I usually exercise in the 160 range, sometimes hitting 170+ during sprints. I cool down to 140 to know I am ok to stop. I cannot even imagine staying at 140 for my entire workout.

But I feel like most Dr's are so afraid of lawsuits and are all about CYA, so they recommend things like this that apply to couch potatos and maybe not someone who is fit.

In regards to HR, I have heard that if your body is used to going higher, than you can continue that while pregnant. But if your body is not used to it, then stay under 140. But I can't find any source for this.

We'll see. With my luck, I'll be so sick when I get pregnant that the gym will be the furthest thing from my mind...

There are several women at ironmagazine.com that have competed, continued working out during pregnancy, and competed again. Also, there's one lady who has been an avid mtn biker for years and because of this was able to continue her strenous rides even while pregnant. So yes I agree with you on the HR and exercise things.

I think they should wait untell after the pregnancy and when the body fully heals.  So they dont stress the baby that is on the inside.  But-that jerome opinion.
