Excercise when you have a cold? - Friday, January 16, 2009 11:07 PM ( #1 )
YES you can!

But only if you have a head cold, which is just sniffling and sneezing.

Other types of colds may not benefit from exercise.
Do not overtrain and remember to "leave some on the table" for your body to fight the virus.
Get +-45 minutes of sunlight so you get enough vitamin D!!!

Where is this coming from?
  • Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise May 1997; 29(5):604-9
  • Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise November 1998; 30(11):1578-83

The investigators found no difference in the symptoms, comparing those who exercised and those who rested. And there was no difference in the time it took to recover from the colds for either group. When the exercisers assessed their own symptoms, they said that they felt fine and, in some cases, they actually felt better.

This is no surprise to us today.  We understand that exercise makes us feel good!

Most of the time you should RECOVER before you train again, but in the instance of these low level viral colds...it has been found to be ok to keep training.

AGAIN!  This is only for the sniffling sneezing type cold, not for other illnesses, especially those that go below the neck!
