Ok so its simple as this, when you're at the gym and you see all the older people lifting 1000000x more than you and you're waiting on him to do a set..do you ever feel embarassed?

And what do you do?

just wondering :)

Now imagine being one of those older guys who is lifting weights LIGHTER than you?

That would've been me when I started.

Anyone who would think they are better than you because they lift more than you during a workout is just  annoying and not worth your time (regardless of their physique).

We all have to start somewhere, as has already been said.  Be proud that you're in the gym, trying to make a positive change.  In the end, most of us aren't even going to come close to Arnold's physique, but we'll have/already have bodies to be proud of that are fit, healthy, and help us live longer.

I find it just as admirable, if not more so, to see the fat person walking as hard as they can on their treadmills and lifting puny weights than the gym gods that are already "beautiful."

I can't wait for the day when I'm in the "beautiful" crowd, though!!!Smile

Come on, G!  Don't sell yourself short Smile

That's right, SoLja.  Every single person in the gym should be answering to one maxim when it comes to the weight they lift: "I'm here to do what I need to do to stimulate growth.  It's not a competition."  Anyone gives you flak about your workout, throw that in their face and remind them that (we can't say it enough) everyone starts somewhere.

Don't worry about the big guys, because although they may be pushing more weight than you, secretly, they're stressing about who's lifting more than them.  Just focus on your own workout, bring the intensity that you need to bring, and like G said, people will admire you for it.

Any punks, haters, and loudmouths can step off!

Everyone is self-conscious at the gym.  Don't fall into the trap of caring what other people there think.  bring your headphones, tune out the distractions, and focus on yourself.  It's about YOU, not THEM Smile

And don't forget, someday, when you're throwing around those poundages yourself, go easy on the noobs who feel self conscious lifting along-side you.  Remember that you were there once too Smile

Yes, that's me in my avatar, and NO, I don't look like that today. That was taken back in Jan '07, and I lost most of that progress when I slacked off last year. I'm on my way back, tho, and I'm using that photo for inspiration.

Just put your head down and get to work, stay focused on the task at hand. Besides considering others for sharing equipment and putting stuff away, you're the only person in that gym.

Put your head down? Don't you need to keep your head up when doing some of the exercises ;)

LOL yeah, Veggeep is 100% right we all start out somewhere. Dont ever feel intimidated by other lifters. When I started out I guy at the gym told me...

"Dont ever do more weight then you can. I tried impressing some of my buddies once by doing more then I could, I ended up with a torn ligament and a hospital bill and for what, bragging rights, its not worth it"-Mike

Ill never forget that, We all started somewhere.

The very rare times ive ever had a "yeah well i can lift this much weight" i just reply "note how youre around 50lbs heavier though, and if we go down maths road, im benching .7 of my BW, youre doing .6 meaning mine is still more impressive even though you do more"

Usually shuts them up lol.

Ive noticed that the few people who can lift big in the gym i go to are actually quite nice and are very willing to help and are very understanding to new people and know theyre starting with low weights.

well when you think about it, those guys are mid 20s to early 30s, i just say, "give me 7 to 10 years" then we'll talk....i mean you are deciding to start something that doesnt really have a specified end so to speak, its a just a journey and some people are further along or they just started before you....just remember there is always someone stronger and someone bigger...that's what keeps me in the gym...so i can one day be that guy that everyone looks at in disgust wondering why anyone would ever want to look like that...good luck though....if you ever need some inspiration i recommend animalpak.com....awesome site from the guys at universal nutrition...
