Effective exercises to combat sciatica
-
Saturday, June 24, 2006 3:08 PM
Hi ppl, In November Last year, i injured myself whilst training in a studio class (body pump). I had pain that orginated from my lower back (right hand side) which travelled down my leg in certain positions e.g. extending leg in seated position / straight kick or bending fowards to touch toes. I carried on exercising after taking one or two days out and the pain gradually went away however the discomfort still occurs in the positions described above. I went to the doctor this year in february and was refered to a physiotherapist has told me i had a trapped sciatic nerve which seems to start in the right buttock. I have been given certain exercises and have found small improvements, however, doing cario work seems to aggrivate the nerve and makes it very uncomfortable. I am starting a new job as a gym instructor and will gradually become a studio instructor. I am just worried that i cannot perform certain moves such as sitting on the floor upright with my legs out straight let alone leaning fowards as well as many other moves. I was wondering whether there is anything i can do to help my problem such as certain medication and prefably exercises. I am taking a course of anti imflammatory tablets and have been discharged from the physio but can go back if i need to. Any help will be greatly appreciated thanks James p.s. why do i get pain in my right wrist when performing exercises such as tricep extentions and bicep curls etc

Lose the Back Pain A workbook and video CD does address this. Pretty good. Includes stretches specific to a particular injury. I do own it and I did find it useful when I pulled my back (not the same injury as you describe). Anyway, the site actually has some info on it as well that you might find very interesting.

There are many suggestions but I would need to know what you were diagnosed with, it could have been sciatica or a number of things really...

Hi, do you need to know anything else Italianangel? What i know, it is just sciatica. My first day working on a gym floor and my leg is killing me. Really bad pain in the right buttock and travels down my leg but doesn't seem to be as painful as the site of pain. It hurts even when i sit down and walk today/ I dont wanna spend money on anything unless i really have to. Anyway, i have no payment method as i do not have a card. Im going to visit my doctor and physio. Is there anything with quick action against sciatica as its making my job really difficult. thanks James

Letshavesome, Sciatica isnt a 'muscular' problem per se. It actually caused by nerve root compression. Back exercises wont actually help your problem. For most people, it slowly down with time. For others, they need to have a discectomy of their slipped disc. This is a very delicate and very very uncomfortable condition. You defintely need to go see your doctor. He will give you pain medication, MRI your back, and then depending on what that shows, discuss with you your options.
