Educate me!
-
Tuesday, April 20, 2004 6:24 PM
hey all, I've decided to switch to start cutting... I've been bulking for awhile and put on a lot of muscle, but also a lot of fat. So, can someone tell me exactly how I should go about that? I've never really gone seriously into cutting down. Should I still be eating like 5 or 6 small meals a day? Protein shakes still? How much cardio should I be doing? Any help would be awesome... Thanks.

For myself, all I did when I went from bulking to cutting was to drop my caloric intake by 10-15% and increase my cardio from 20 mins to 30 mins. You want about a 500 cal/day deficit to lose the fat and spare the muscle.

Should I still be eating like 5 or 6 small meals a day? Yes. Powerhaus pretty much said it. Train hard. But up the cardio and maybe cut back a bit on eating.. Just enough to reduce the calories by an average of 500 calories but keep the muscle you have. You don't want to starve yourself or do so much cardio that you actually slow down your metabolism.

Quick question... When you start cutting, do you notice any significant strength or energy loss from eating less?

Big energy loss the first couple of weeks, but I haven't actually noticed much, if any, strength loss.

ORIGINAL: mda1125 Just enough to reduce the calories by an average of 500 calories but keep the muscle you have. Minor clarification: you want to reduce your intake so that you're consuming about 500 calories less than you burn, not just less than you're currently eating. If you're on a bluk plan now, for instance, just reducing 500 calories may not run a deficit. (But be sure to figure your daily caloric expenditure based on the increased exercise you'll be doing when you're cutting.)
