Dont know where to start? - Tuesday, July 29, 2003 2:53 AM ( #1 )
i really want to start bodybuilding but i dont know where to start.

im 21, 6ft and weigh 275lbs, i have got a gut but i wouldnt say i was overly fat i am really stocky build.

want i would like to know is do i find a mainly cardio program that burns the fat first or do i go straight into mass building and hope that burns off all the fat?

any advice would be brilliant.

Humm..

Do you want to gain some muscle? And workout pretty darn hard? Get your diet straight and eat more?

While you could just do cardio.. I' m thinking that if you incorporate lifting and 3x a week cardio, your body will begin to see some major changes.

Tell me.. are you opposed to heavy lifting? 45-60 mins in the gym?

Oh and Welcome to DB.. I think we can get you on the right track once I find out what your goals might be..

thanks for the welcome, as for my goals, i would like to get big, strong and toned.
i am not opposed to lifting heavyweights and lifting three times a week would be perfect time wise.

as for my diet, i am eating healthy just sporadically (shift work put me into a one meal a day thing that i am just getting away from).

i was told recently that the best thing for me would be to lift three times a week, doing heavy sets of bench press, squats and deadlifts, and to continue on this routine for at least 3 months to build size.
is that a good plan, or could i add more exercises to it.

cheers,
cpl

One meal a day- I used to do that for a long time- I wasn' t trying to lose weight by starving myself or anything (I' m sure that' s not what you had in mind either) I was just never really hungry. After getting my diet straightened out though, I felt a lot better and saw more results from working out. A lot more- Take care of your eating, probably the best thing you can do to get going in the right direction.

As for those exercises, they' re some of the most basic ones that involve a lot of major muscles, and they will definitely increase your overall strength and size. They' ll build a really strong foundation- And perhaps the person who told you to do them for three months has stuff in store for the rest of your muscles after that time, but my personal opinion is, why wait? Do something for all the muscles now, and all the muscles will be growing at the same time. Sure, it might help to have a strong back, thighs and chest before you throw hamstrings, shoulders, biceps, triceps, calves etc into the workout- But I think it' s a good idea to do something for everything right from the start. Just take it easy, and don' t start out too heavy- Work your way up to the weights you find are challenging but not dangerous for each body part. It sounds like you' re really going to hit the weights hard and smart, you' re going to love the payoff.
