Dont Power Clean Unles You Eat Enough - Thursday, October 02, 2008 2:57 PM
I though I could do it with not eating much yesterday. I thought Id eat after. NOOOOOOOOO! I did a few power cleans and felt like I was about to pass out. No I didn't come close to passing out, but felt like I could. I got that after big lift stare. I just started staring at some guy doing a leg curl. Probably thought I was gay. Leaned up against a machine and drank some water. Eating a lot should be the prerequisite to a good power clean.

Breathing.  I use to be the same way doing deadlifts.  Always felt like I was going to pass out after a set.  Make sure you get a good deep breath before pulling.

Yeah its your breathing, not how much you ate.

You need to work on this, because it can turn into a problem down the road. I cleaned, i think it was around 185 or so, racked it, felt light headed passed out and about broke my nose. Blood everywhere, not fun.

I have been lowering the weight im at 145 right now, working on my breathing while doing them, and so far it has improved. I recommend you do the same, keep the weight low. Start the rep, catch it and reset, dont spend to long in the rack position.

You could also be cleaning the bar up and it pushing against the artery in your neck, but if you were doing that I think that would be pretty obvious.

I'm Power Cleaning now and I'm cutting. Love it.

In fact, it energizes me.

Exercising summons a greater demand for energy, now whether that's from food or from bodyfat, your body pulls it out of somewhere - which is precisely why I look forward to working out more when I'm tired or cbf.

Dude I'm obviously not pressing against the Carotid artery. Man could you imagine?

You guys sure its teh breath? I thought it was not eating enough.

So whats the rhythm? Deep breath then power clean up then blow out as you go back down then deep breathe?

It could be lack of carbs or energy... I've lifted heavy on an empty stomach and felt the same feeling. But It could also be your breathing, hard to say.

1st off, you shouldn't even be lifting if you're not eating enough.

2nd, power cleans will make you almost pass out if you bend over long enough, then explode up.  I found that during my 'mental preparation' before a power clean, I have to remain standing up.  When I'm finally ready to do the power clean, then I bend down and then just immediately do it.

- Deep breath
- Power Clean
- Breathe out while taking weight down

is it really a good idea to let out and basically relax your core while lowering the weight?  i would say at least breath out then back in before lowering.  though it could just be me.
No the leg press is not the same as doing squats.

thats what I do, breath out at the top rack position. breath in again, hold and lower the weight.

Im scared to death of passing out again, so I adopted this, and it has helped.

WOW Great advice from everyone! I wish I could go to the gym right now and do them. Today is deadlift day anyways. But like Phersn said, lack of carb energy can do it too.

So it sounds like, while standing to the mental prep. go down and breathe in, jump up then breathe out, then breathe in while going down.

Really? I don't get that

Generally when I finish my set of cleans, I feel my heart is getting all the workout, maybe one day it'll pop out. It happens sometimes
Squat max - 245lbs
Bench max - 188lbs
Deadlift max - ¿?
Front Squats(atg)- 5x165lbs

If you bend over for a long time while breathing normally (or heavy) and then you stand up quickly you will get that "light-headed, almost black out" feeling.  You know what I mean?

Well, when I first started power cleaning, I would put my hands around the bar and "psyche myself up".   When I would actually do the power clean, I'd get this crazy head rush and almost black out for a few seconds.

Now I do the psyching myself up part while I'm standing up, that way I'm only bent over for a second or less before I do the clean.
