Does strength come with age? - Monday, June 05, 2006 3:00 PM ( #1 )
I wasnt sure on really where to post this but, i was wondering if maybe you get stronger as you get older. Im not asking if a person who has worked out longer but a person who is just plain older. Because im 15 and can only bench 200, but a person who is 16 and has been lifting for just as long as me can do 240. So can i expect to gain a lot of strength when im 16.  thanks.

As you grow, you're going get more muscle, naturally- However, different people grow at different rates- The fact that you know someone a year older who can lift more might not have to do with their age. There are a lot of factors when it comes to strength and building muscle, age itself plays a pretty small role when you consider the rest.
Proper diet and the right training is far more important than age. With the right amounts of the right foods, and the right type of training, you could be lifting more than this sixteen year old in a relatively short amount of time-
And, even though there are plenty of people older than you who can lift more than you right now, believe me when I tell you there are plenty of guys in their early/mid twenties who can't bench 200 pounds. Of course, they don't work out- But the point is, age itself doesn't bring more strength.

To a certain extent, like was said, your muscles will grow naturally and you will have more testosterone. Also, he may train harder or be bigger in general. Genetics shouldn't be left unaccounted for.

Your stats are identical to mine when i was 16.  I think it really depends on your maturity -- i was done growing when i was 14 and fairly mature at 16.  Being 19 now, i don't think age has gotten me ANY stronger.  But if you still have some height to gain or some width to add to your shoulders, + the aforementioned higher T levels, it may help.

But don't expect too much!  Just lift hard and do your best :)

there's this 8th grader boy in my school, 5'6 and i'd say about 120 or 130 lbs. his friends say he can bench 250 and i was like. no way dude..
i later told this 23 year old football friend of mine, and he said it could be possible because some people mature really early and that's when the strength kicks in, but i don't know.. and 8th grader like him benching 250..

or cus some ppl are just all chest and no legs, so they're light but they can bench like crazy and can't squat for sh*t.  but 250 for a guy who weighs 120-130...i dont know...

I really think a lot of this "crazy" stuff is possible.  Myself and friends have found that we could hit 225 lbs bench max after 1 year of training.  So if someone started lifting when they were 12 - which sounds ridiculous but if someone's fairly mature they could do that - it would certainly be possible to bench a good amount by age 14.  They might risk losing a couple inches of height tho lol...

I've gotta say with deadlifts i did 275 lbs the day i learned how to do them (2 weeks ago when i had our trainer teach me).  And we could have pushed further.

The world's strongest men are going to be older cuz that gives them more time to train.........
It's like, 10 years of training versus 20, which wins?  lol...

Once again strength will only come with age if your body keeps growing and maturing.  I took a significant break from weights between age 16 and 19 and as i said i DIDN"T get stronger.......!

i hope i could bench as much as these 12-13 year olders and im like 6 foot 2 and 15 lol i must agree that some of these claims are bs even if they had a year or so of training theyd like break something and that kind of weight training would definately do something to their bone structure especially at that age

You're more than likely correct henry3.  Just take it as it comes and don't rush yourself.  And also, don't let younger people intimidate you.  You may be developing slower than some other ppl (not making fun, cuz I'm that way, too) and even though they're 12 or 13, they could be at the same physical development as an adolescent 16 year old.  I mean, I know people who hit puberty in 5th and 6th grade!  I consider an advantage to me, cuz they peak faster.....
