I'm 15 years old. I just started going to a gym and I've been wondering if you have to eat/drink a supplement when you work out. Can't you just workout and eat normal food like breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper. Wont your body heal and make muscle without the extra protein supplements. And are the supplements healthy? I mean eating natural foods like nuts, eggs, milk, fish I personally think is much healthier than getting protein from protein bars, protein shakes, etc.

Protien is protien none is better than the other and yes you can get all your protien from regular food sources but to achieve the desired protien intake for someone looking to gain muscle it's hard because to get that much protien from food you have to take in a whole lot of calories. Yes by the way protien shakes and other supp.s are pretty healthy unless they are abused.

Last time I checked, protein supplied 4 calories no matter what the source was. The shakes can help you to balance out the proportions of protein carbs and fat so you have the amount you need...but you can do that with food too. At 3000 calories 100% is from whole foods right now, I had to be smart to keep from eating too much protein...and make sure I get enough quality carbs. I have to watch the fat intake so it does not go over 30%, otherwise my metabolism slows and I start to gain fat. Too little fat and I am not as strong and get hungry hungry hungry. If I eat too much carb, I get VERY hungry, too little and I lose water...I shrink! I then get cravings for crazy things!!! Too much protein can dehydrate, slow protein absorption, and cause loss of calcium. Of course too little and I stop recovering and growing! Eating balanced and healthy...almost never goes wrong...then you can tweek your diet to get even more from it as you learn about the subtle things!

I've always been told that supps are safe. Its so much easier to take a pill or drink a mix then to eat a whole bunch of stuff.

Dan, I think he meant in order to get equivalent amount of protein you will take in more calories, which is not entirely true, because if your meat is lean, almost all the cals are from protein

"Make no mistake about it, soy protein does not have the nitrogen retaining, anti catabolic, muscle building abilities of proteins such as whey, whole egg, red meat, etc." http://www.muscleblitz.com/soy_protein.htm

I understand where your comming from, and from looking at your pics, I can see that you know a thing or 2 bout bodybuilding, I was just givin my opinion, I think Soy has many great benefits, I just "personally" believe that Whey protein would be more beneficial, than Soy as a post workout protein, to build quality lean muscle.

xpawel15x While I am sure the suggestions for that will come in droves... After considering the contents I want, I shop by serving price. A 20 buck canister that has 10 servings is no match for a 20 buck canister that has 30 servings of what you want. All servings are not created equal. I decide how much Pro/Carb/Fat I want and decide on a serving for me. If I say I want 27 grams of protein then... Designer whey, at $15 for a 2 lb canister says it gives you over 40 scoops of 18 grams of protein 2g carbs and 1.5g fat. I would need to take 1.5 scoops and this would be 26 servings....0.58 per serving If I wanted a more balanced meal replacement and wanted 36 g Pro / 46 g Carb / 2g fat I can combine 1.5 scoops of designer with 1 scoop of this and get what I want: Universal Gain Fast at 20 bucks for a 5 pound container says it gives you over 50 scoops at 9g protein 43g carbs and .8g fat (scoop cost 0.40 per) That is a meal replacement drink at under a buck a serving. I would add flax or omega oils to this because the fat is too low for me...even mixing with milk helps the nutrient profile.
