Do sports supplements really work?
-
Friday, June 20, 2008 12:16 AM
The first couple of years I started working out I never took any sports supplements because I didn't think I needed them. After a while I began to have second thoughts and purchased everything that was on sale at GNC that I thought would help me out. Besides a little extra energy before each workout I can honestly say that I really didn't get much results from using the supplements. Do you think sports supplements work or are they more of a placebo that gets people to workout harder?

Depends on the supplement. I wouldn't say any are placebos though. Protein powders work in that they are extra calories, which is helpful when somebody wants 4000-5000 calories a day and would like the occasional break from shoveling down solid food. Creatine has been shown to be effective in a significant number of studies, but don't expect any miracles on it. It is rare that I see any benefits from creatine, the only reason I take it is because I have benefited at times and it is so low impact that I have no reason not to. Multi-vitamins will not usually produce any noticeable results but along with glucosamine they can be good in preventing injuries/ illness. You could also look into BCAAs, Acetyl L Carninite, Beta Alanine, and arginine. I consider all of those legit, from personal experience. But you really won't see anything special from them. You are better off saving your money for the massive grocery bills you should racking up. For the most part though, lots of food and lots of water will be the best thing you can put in your body. It is good that you no longer expect miracles from supplements, that is a cycle that most newbies won't get out of for years. Btw I wasn't calling you a newbie in that last sentence, I actually have no idea what your experience level is.

Multi, Whey, and a good diet. Proper diet is really the best thing you can do for yourself, you wont get anywhere if you don't eat correctly. Creatine is good, but not mandatory. Bodybuilding is 80% diet, 20% training.

They work to a degree but you cant just use them and do nothing else and expect to get big and what not. You need to maintain a proper diet which is probably most important, supplements are exactly just wht they say a supplement to something, their there to help you, they cant really do that much harm
