Welcome to the club.....I will send you a jacket.
I dislocated mine completely....picture Daffy Duck with his bill knocked around to the side of his head. It had to be put back it....the hospital drained 300 cc of blood out of it, put a soft cast on for 2 weeks for the swelling to go down, then a hip to ankle cast for 4 more weeks. The surgeon said he would repair the damage "if it happened again".
It happened again...2 years later. Surgeon said "we will operate...if it happens again".
Talk about frustrating.
I have not completely dislocated it again since, but have done minors probably close to 50 times. My original injury was about 17 years ago....and has never improved. I had another MRI on it last January because I was at a Orthopedics office for a Herniated Disc and he saw a fairly large bulge pop out of the inside of my knee when I would squat. According to the MRI results....there is nothing they can do to repair it...."it is beyond repair, there is too much scar tissue inside" was his exact words...quite possibly the biggest let down in my life, knowing that I would have to deal with this forever. That is also the initial diagnosis for my herniated disc....but that is another story.
You can learn to live with it, and get a knee brace with the patella cut out, a neoprene one whould do the trick. This is not really a repairable injury....short of a knee replacement. If your's was not severe to the point of the bone groove being worn away, as mine is, you should be ok with muscle rehab and strengthening.
*Be aware...the risk of reinjury is alot higher after activity then during, as the muscle are tight and strong, but get weak and loose after. My initial, and second complete were during activity, but the other 50 were primarily from slipping on icy streets or wet floors when walking. Take care of it, and I hope you don't end up in the same shape I'm in.
Sorry if that sounds really negative.....I have a severe case, and I am working with it, still working out and was still playing football, golf and hockey on it...so it isn't a lost cause, just take care of it and get the brace for safety's sake, but only wear it when doing sports, because with all braces, the negate strengthening of support muscles because the brace does the work.
