Discuss Bodybuilding Idea - Sunday, May 29, 2005 1:38 PM ( #1 )
It just occurred to me that we have no forums dedicated to mental health on DB.

We have many psychology majors/grads here and an out of bounds forum that occasionaly births a posting about how to "meet girls" how to overcome shyness, how to cope with the loss of a loved one..etc..

We have a female forum and an injury rehab forum where posters occasionally battle working out with low motivation, and finding the struggle to stay motivated while simultaneously battling underlying depressive thoughts. And back to out of bounds where we talk about the dangers of anorexia and dysmorphia, and whether or not to workout in order to attract a mate.

As great as DB is..I think we should have an advice forum about love, hormones, and mental health etc..something that is easy to access and will give many newbies - or those members who do not have large amounts of time to spend at the computer - a direct place to go to find answers to thier questions without having to browse in different forums for their topic.

Dont forget its not just fitness and great nutritional habits. Living a healthy lifestyle also requires mental stability and health. We have many different outlets in the forums here for various aspects of fitness and nutrition, and I think one dedicated to the mind would be a valuable asset to this community.

could be, or you just put it all into one mind/sex/health forum..hmm..thats a good question..not sure, either one would be good but some people are shy so you might fill it up quicker with just one as opposed to sub-forums.

I think that it would be a great idea. I can start off by saying that I think it would help alot people. I'm in a situation right now...

Yesterday early early morning I get a call form my mother that my father was having problems breathing. She said she had to call an ambulance to have him taken to the hosp. They ran all these tests and everything had come back negative. So later in the day test results came back that he had a heart attack and is now in the ICU. Now I can't say that my father has had a very healthy life. He is a disabled veteran. Also last year he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He was in the hosptial for almost three months for that. Since then he's been in and out.

So thats part of a long story short. Like I said prior, I think this would be great. It would be nice to talk to other people and share their good, bad and sad times. Also it helps with mental health to talk to people about their stories. It's helps to motivate people and cheer them up whatever the situation is.

Thanks for this post!! It meant alot to me!!

LeeLa you're welcome.

thats very unfortunate, you have my best wishes.

Weird, I was *JUST* out with a friend tonite..seems this prostate issue is RAMPANT in men, especially older men. I've lost count how many of my friends and thier friends have had these prostate scares in the past 6 months alone.

and a heart attack..that's pretty scary stuff..how old is your father?

Seems your father has had his fair share of "brushes" so to speak..and has survived them all..each day he lives is a blessing.

I hope everything works out for you and your family

Most, if not all, older men will have an enlarged prostate and associated symptoms.

Leela, hope you father is doing well. Best Wishes.

One of the reasons I am active in the sport of bodybuilding is to "help" my own body stay healthy.  I have glaucoma, genetic high cholesterol, a cataract (replaced lens) and an enlarged prostate with an elevated PSA (checked twice for cancer). All of these things are diabetic symptoms.  My father and grandfather died from the disease at an early age.  I'm determined not to.    I think Ros's idea has great merit.

Let's keep this in mind guys... and it shows in a post that I had to remove in the Injuries and Prevention..

DB is about bodybuilding.

When you step into health, inuries, advice.. you are gonna piss people off.

Bodybuilding isn't the emotion really.  It's opinons and some science and pretty much common blueprints to success.

When you go into mental health, advice areas, family problems.. sex.. you open up a world of hurt if it gets out of control.

While our community has been very active lately and we pretty much all get along, it only takes 1 person (troll) to start a fire and everybody goes ballistic.

Can you imagine a sex forum?  All the teens would be there.  Unless I up and sell porn and graphic pictures, it's a damn waste of bandwidth with little to no return.

DB is a community forum.

DB also much have some potential for revenue to reduce the cost of running this place.

With that in mind:

What could be a good parent forum name?  And what would the sub-forums look like?

I dunno man, I know this is a site only about bodybuilding but do you ever check out your bodybuilding forum opponents? they all have from the music forum, fighting forum to the girl talk forum. even have tips on pimpin' forum, pics of hot girls forum. but then again those sites dont have the quality this site has.

But then again, with forums dedicated to sex & love, mind etc, we run the risk of overshadowing the main reason for this board and losing focus of the main topic of the board- bodybuilding. Like Marc said, all the teenagers will start flooding the sex forum which, inevitably, detract attention away from bodybuilding. Not to mention, diminish the credibility of this site if those forums get out of hand. Many people come to DB.com for its pure content (relatively), great advice and friendly environment. It would be a shame if we start to lose people's interest due to the site becoming less bodybuilding-orientated.

There are plenty of other forums (and websites) out there dedicating forums to those kinda topics so theres no shortage of 'info'. Maybe it might be best to keep this place focussed on bodybuilding with Out of Bounds serving as the place for all Misc. posts. It might make sense to create Sub-forums in Out of bounds instead of making a New forum.

good points, Marc, Lynx..

didnt look at it that way..sub forums in oob..that might be cool too..

yes I can see how it would get filled pretty quickly although with a domain like discussbodybuilding, I'd assume most members would be coming on here with that interest (being bodybuilding) in common..

it could go either way.

Despite all thats been said, i think its good to have an avenue to challenge the mind. And Ros, youre right in saying that there is a mental component to lifting weights but i cant really imagine a whole forum/sub-forum dedicated to motivational strategies.

My final verdict: A sub-forum in OOB dedicated to the "affairs of the mind"

weight Training is like a sport or football practise you have to train your mind that you want to do it and you have to stick with it  for life mentality . ect
