Diet Coke - Bad or OK before a competition? - Thursday, June 15, 2006 7:20 AM ( #1 )
Hi.  I'm going to be competing in my first figure competition in 3 weeks and I had a quick question on Diet Coke.  Is one can (12 oz) a day OK, or will it impede my fat loss and muscular definition?  I know that the issue with it is not that it doesn't have any calories, but that it contains sodium.  Any help or advice would be appreciated!  Thanks!

I'd ditch it. I sincerely doubt it's going to help any, and at competition level, if it doesn't help, it'll probably hurt.
It won't make a world of difference- But it's the slight edges that help out a lot when you compete.

Diet coke contains phenylalanine, a chemical that breaks down into a few harmless other chemicals, and one bad one, an aldehyde. Think "Formeldehyde." Aldehydes are hydrocarbon preservatives, meaning they will literally tighten your fat cells, thus preventing a tight, onion skin like cut. Your best bet is to avoid anything with artificial sweetner. You'd be better off drinking in the sugar or a can of regular soda IMHO. if you need something sweet, and ketosis isn't a big deal to you, any high quality juice, or even fitness water will hit the spot. I'm not sure if the new splenda diet sodas contain phenylalanine. by law, it must say on the packaging.

It probably is bad, I would think. Since it has aspartame.
