It is true, and it's biochemically valid.

Your muscles (all your cells actually) have a least 3 different ways to generate energy, the best known are the ATP pathway(aerobic), and the Lactic Acid pathway (anaerobic). Aerobic is long term, steady flow kind of energy, while Anaerobic is more for an intense power spike.

But there's also the Creatine Phosphate pathway, which is even faster, more intense, and shoerter acting than the Lactic Acid/Anaerobic pathway. The CP pathway provides for very short term "burst strength", and when you have more creatine in your body, you can produce more energy via the CP pathway. So it's great for helping you punch through sticking points in your lifts, and therefore lift better.

And of course, creatine requires a lot of water to dissolve it, so when it gets into your muscles it pumps them full of water, making them bigger. So creatine makes you bigger and stronger, but not by giving you more muscle tissue. But, the extra strength can help you lift better, and therefore build more muscle tissue.

Creatine is creatine, it's just what they mix it with, or how fine they grind it up, or whatever. Some put sugar in it to help it absorb faster, for example. Most of the rest is hype. A lot of supplements are salts, one positively charged molocule with a negatively charged one, but once they hit water they break apart, so it's not like they affect each toher THAT much once you take them.
