I've not used them but I've heard of them a few times.

If you do some searching you can find some interesting workouts.  They seem pretty popular with strength training athletes.

They do seem to come in various weights and sizes. 

Give them a try and see if you like them.  From what I've read, they seem oriented for home gyms or gyms related to powerlifting but that's just my observation and not a statement of fact.

They will not do anything for you that dumbbells, cables, machines, etc., will do. Like anything, there is a gimmick tied to the tool.

I have never used them but the proponents claim the weight displacement can not be simulated by substituting with a dumbbell. I could see how that would cause you to use stabilizing muscles that would otherwise not be engaged. Again I have never used them, but I think I would like to try. I think it might be more then a gimick.

I think that clearly cables and machines would have no chance of stimulating what these do, since they are poor at stimulating even convetional free-weights.
