what kind of dumbbells do you use? i use the cheap junk from wal mart with the rubber in the middle but when i slide the plates on, the rubber shrinks as i tighten the plates to stay on the bar. now im looking for all metal dumbells. i can put as much weight on as i want without haveing 50 different weight sizes lying around. any suggestions?

I have learned that I am too lazy to keep adjusting dumbells with little plates - I'd rather have a set in the weight groups I use most. They don't take up a lot of space.

It doesn't say how much the handles weigh.

I have a massed a number of different adjustable dumbells over the past couple of years. All of mine (4 different manufactureres) weight 5 lbs (oops no one weights 3lbs), they are all basically the same They vary in length, some are more hollow than others, the threading varries slightly, some are cut better than others. So it boils down the longer ones have more room to accomidate more plates. And if you end up with a variety, you have to keep the collars mated to the bar, because other wise there will be slight weight differances. Other than that it really doesn't matter when it comes to those things.

I've ended up buying dumbbells progressively in 5 lb increments, since I also don't want to have to keep changing out plates if I want to change the weight between sets, etc. Makes a bit of a mess, but not that bad really. The biggest visual problem is that none of them match each other....

Those bowflex dumbells always seemed pretty convenient and a good space saver, but I bet they are expensive.

I've been buying the hex ones - look at them as a long-term investment that will last for decades.
