They say in order to overcome something, you have to overcome it with something more painfull than it itself. I think working abs fit that profile.
For that I am now doing light-heavy painfull ab crunches for lower and upper abs.
Definitely not true. Pain is not necessary for getting great results- I've been working out for years, and used to stick to the whole "No pain, no gain" axiom. Since learning what building muscle really entails, my workouts aren't painful, and I feel no pain the next day- OR the day after that, or ever. And I'm getting better results than ever, these past few years. Here's what I do for abs, for example-
3 sets of cable crunches, 6-8 reps
3 sets of weighted decline crunches, 6-8 reps
3 sets of hanging leg raises, 6-8 reps
Add to that the workout that your abs get when doing heavy squats and deadlifts, and you should be set- If that type of routine gives you pain, you're probably trying to use too much weight. I do that routine once a week.
As far as your lower back goes- So you're out of commission for a while? When did this happen? Did you go to a doc, or what? If it's a serious injury, you'll have to lay off everything for a while- Abs, arms, the whole deal. Let your body recover.
