Cut or bulk at 17% body fat? - Friday, September 04, 2009 11:07 AM ( #1 )
I just measured my body fat and it's 17%. Quite hight, right? My lower abs are not visible at all and my waist is 32". My weight is 167.5 lbs (76 kg) and my height is 5 11'' (181 cm). So the question is... cut or bulk? And i just bought a weight gainer BSN True-Mass, so i guess I shouldn't have done it.

Might as well bulk since you are light.

Won't it be harder to cut when i get to 20% bf if I bulk now? And if I cut, I'm gonna lose muscles too, right? I'll eat less, consume less calories and in this case will need some protein supplement to get 1 gramm of protein per 1 pound of weight?

it really depends on how comfortable you are with yourself at that %BF...

I'd like to have more visible lower abs. And to gain 15 more lean pounds and to be that way.

17% is already rather chubby. the more fat u have the harder and longer your cutting phase will be

.. I would just eat a little over maintenance and eat clean and not worry about it. You will probably gain mostly muscle and a little fat, but the more muscle you have the easier it is to lose fat. It won't be harder to cut if your diet is right. You don't need a protein supplement really. Maybe some whey twice per day just for easy calories and quality protein.

^ This.

IMO eat around maintenance, lift weights, do cardio... You don't really have to choose between a cut or bulk if you're starting out with higher BF levels.  You should be able to make good progress in both, at least for a while.

The problem really is that it's hard to eat low-calorie food that would be rich in protein at the same time. If i just eat a little bit less, consuming, say, 80 gramms of protein a day for my weight, will it be enough to cut fat and sustain my current muscle level? Muscles are 42% of my body.

Protein is the least calorically dense food, it has 4 calories per gram just like carbs, but your body burns 30% of those calories in the digestion process.  If you eat clean and keep the fiber high, from fruits and veggies, the fat should creep off while your overall body composition improves.

i used to be at around the same bf as you and then i cut down to around 8 or 9 % and i'll just say i'll never let myself get that big again, personally it just feels the best when your that low and you can still rep the weight you did when you were bulking.  Like right now im just trying to maintain, but get stronger. so idk how you feel about yourself or how long you've been lifting or anything but i'd say cut

I'd definitely get some whey if i were you.  but i mean if you diet right, a little muscle loss is almost inevitable.  some people are pro keto and some are against it, but its one of the best diets to help preserve muscle, so i'd look into that and see how you feel about it.

To be honest, you don't have a lot of muscle mass to preserve, so I wouldn't try to cut hardcore if I were you.  You can lose some of that fat while gaining muscle if you eat around maintenance and do resistance training & cardio.  Mavric had a pretty good amount of LMM when he cut, and he'd been lifting for quite a while.  These are two very different scenarios.

Ok, thanks, guys, I'll try eating around maintenance and see what happens, because losing muscles is the last thing I'd want.
