I've been thinking of making my own bench. There are a couple of good carpenters here. I was thinking what I'd need to get started. Just pure wood aint so recommended. Im betting it'd be much cheaper if I made my own. Any ideas? Feeling crazy and hyped right now...hardcore to the max!

I wouldn't try it. It may be dangerous to use. Just get a gym membership or just buy the bench.

wouldn't you just weld one rather than build with wood?

do you have the tools for welding? make sure to test out the strength of the benches some how before using them, it would suck to be lowering 200lbs and the bench breaks under you, impailing you with a leg and leaving you crushed under the weight screaming for help but you are alone and eventually bleed to death and then are found the next morning... that would definately suck

Yea... The hype in creating something is just so great.. Sudden creativity burst. I was thinking of fixing my own pull up bar so I thought...'why not make my own gym?' and crazy thoughts started flowing in and ....hahaha... anyway.. thanks bro!

nice idea, now i wanna do it too! if ima build anything why not a bench! I did do the pull up idea already and it is waaay better then a pull up bar you can buy anywhere. I got a strong peice of metal cylinder with a hole through it and i got those thick, chrome tight looking chain to go through and out of both ends of the bar and screwed it on my hard cealing then I put on those dark gray foamy thing that goes over cylinders to make it look even tighter. I posted a picture of it on this site long ago, maybe you can find it. got everything needed from Home Depot. The hardest part of making the pull up bar was drilling my cealing, it is sooo hard and tough to go through, took me about 20 mins to drill one of the holes and it was the best shoulder exercise I have ever had :)

I sure as heck wouldnt bench on a wooden bench. It would be scary as hell...but a home made gym would be really cool.

I do not think it is that complicated to make a bench. Be sure to use good steel pipe. Maybe 12 guage steel tubing or lower. You can get 3 x 3, 2 x 2, or 4 x 3 tubes to make the bench with. Look at some of the benches at the YMCA for ideas. There is some basic engineering to having pipes attached to all legs, going along under the back pad and between the uprights so that the legs do not bend out. U am not sure how they attach the upholstery. I know that they use ensolite padding and either naugahyde or saucony upholstery. You could use leather too if you want. It is alot of work to build just one. Maybe you could start a business. Let me know if you want me to help you sell them.

Not nescarliy. All he needs is a normal bench and wrap some foam around it, then weild some other stuff to it, (Jerry Rigging 101) But hell for all that just do it on the damn floor...I wouldn't do anything HEAVY but just reps maybe..
