Everything I read about pro-hormones, the more I think they aren't such a hot idea.  When I do the cost-benefit balance sheet, it works out that in my book, the cost is too high for a benefit too small.

Having said that, I'm not a candidate for pro-hormone use:  I've only been working out a year, and still struggling with diet and best exercises.

So, my question:  why do you use/not use/would consider using prohormones in context of the costs and risks?  Please post your age and years of consistent working out and disciplined diet with your answer.

Note that I'm not trying to be judgmental or anything, I'm just trying to understand.

For me prohormones are out of the question because I have so many hormonal issues to begin with.  I'm 48 and have been working out about 11-12 years.  I've only missed 2 periods of about 3 months and 6 months during that whole time (mother's illness and death in 1993 and my surgery in 2004).

I am on thyroid replacement (Levoxyl) for hypothyroidism; Androgel for low testosterone; Humatrope for growth hormone replacement; metformin for insulin resistance and prediabetes; Lexapro and Ambien for depression and sleep disturbance (Ambien is da bomb!  Lunesta sucks).

The last thing I need is to muck around with my hormones and body chemistry anymore! Smile

In a way I think working out and putting on so much weight may have contributed to my hormonal issues coming out (which were there anyway).  For example, thyroid med is dosed based on bodyweight.  When I started packing on weight from lifting, my dosage was too low and I went hypothyroid again.  I had an idiot doctor that didn't catch this.  It caused a cascade effect.  It caused me to gain fat which in turn may have contributed to my insulin resistance.  My father had Type 2 diabetes, which there is a genetic predisposition for.  Lucky me.

But I forge ahead.  Smile

My stars! And I'll bet you meet a lot of interesting people, too. I'm always interested in meeting interesting people."
