I should try this.  I wanna get 5:30 or better because thats what I did in jr high and if I could do it now with that much more weight itd be good.

Last time I did it though I couldnt break 6 minutes.  I was smoking cigarettes though...This should be fun.

RS,
How much do you run?  How much did you weigh in Jr. High?  If you're heavier that's a lot of pounding on the joints, knees in particular.  Realize you're young but all those miles over the years with a heavy body take their toll.

Besides playin basketball and occasional sprints, I dont ever run.  I definatly dont ever do long distance.

If you play bball and do sprints and all that leg training, you, no doubt, have stronger knees than mine.  At your weight, imo, I'd stay away from long distance.  The 1000s of reps pounding those knees with all that weight:  Not good.

ill try this tomorrow but i haven't done pushups and situps since my "season" and last time i tried them i could only do half i could normally do despite dropping about 20 pounds. I haven't ran in forever but I used to be pretty good at the mile mid 5 mins i think was always one of the top 3-4 in school when we had to for our gym classes. Hoping for a 12-14 min time.

Good luck everyone!

Sure I'll get beat up for this, but why would you want to do full sit ups?  You're not working abs, you're working hip flexors, right?  Crunches ftw!

PK,
Just because hip flexors are activated does not mean old-school situps are a proper and safe exercise to develop them, right?  From my book Strength Training Anatomy, "when performing specific exercises for the abdomen, if the back is not rounded with intense contraction of the rectus abdominus and the internal and external obliques, the powerful psoas hip flexors will increase the lumbar curve, forcing the intervertebral discs forward.   This causes increased pressure at the posterior lumbar vertebral articulations, which can cause low back pain or, more seriously, articular compression or shearing."
So as long as you can perform a full situp without arching the lower back, you're golden.  But if you arch, you put your lower back and spine in jeopardy.  True?

I'd agree and I was just messing with you on the whole hip flexor thing.

PK,
Srsly,  I did a little searching on the web.  Well just looked at one site that said the situp has gotten a bum rap.  "When performed properly" the situp is actually more functional because it develops a natural body action:  sitting up from a lying position, such as getting up from sleeping.  Problem is back has to be peeled off the floor/bed in sequence from shoulders to hips and not lower back first.  As long as learned properly, they're safe.  Also said a lot of people perform crunches dangerously as well, arching the lower back.  I have a tough time with not arching the lower back so I stay away from situps.

I'm glad we're buddies!

Yup have to be careful about hyperextension. I think it talked about that in Rippetoe's Starting Strength actually. I used to do that when deadlifting, never got a vid up though.

PK,
I would think some arch in the back when doing deads would be okay, to keep you from rounding which is the danger there, no?

a natural arch is what you are looking for. I would overcompensate the arch and actually hyperextend the back.

Well this week I am maxing on all my lifts.

today was Bench + Powercleans and normal 3x3 squats

I successfully completed my workout and then decided to be bold...

and I ran the mile in an exhausting 5:57. My goal was to run it in under 6 minutes...

Let me tell you after maxing and 3x3 squats @295...attempting to run a mile as fast as possible was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do... I had to mentally make myself finish, I wanted to stop so bad. When I got off the treadmill I laid on the floor for about 1 minute, not because I was exhausted ( I was ) but because I couldnt move my legs, lol.

Im going to do the second part tomorrow and Ill combine the times, looking forward to seeing some of your times!

*finally got it up loaded :D

Since you're allowed to do the treadmill, I'll get in on this tomorrow at the gym.  I'm doing 3x3 squats tomorrow, so I'll be feeling your pain nmoney.

I'm getting in on this, sounds like fun. Come on Hardway and Jane!!!

From the way people are talking it doesn't sound like the mile and push/sits have to be back to back.

They dont. I wanted to make it difficult but a little easier this first time so we will combine the mile time, and the situps/push ups time. But yeah different days if you want, just need both times by saturday night before 12am (I was saying pm) basically before it turns sunday if I confused anyone.

Somebody else post there situps/pushups times, because atm my 8:43 is very depressing I need something to compare it to.

Been busy with football and some other stuff, but i'll do the mile sometime in the next couple days.

S***, we had to do 5 sets of 20 pushups last night, with no resting (laying down) between sets, and only 10 second breaks between sets.  We also did well over 100 situps too.  Dammit, I didn't get to time it though.

8:41:16 for Push ups + situps...

man push ups were cake, but the situps killed me the last 50. I thought this part would be a breeze.

8:41:16 (pushups + situps) + 5:57 (mile) = 13.98 minutes total time

Looking forward to seeing some of your total times!

Dang I gotta get 5:54 to beat that. I was like 5:59 over a year ago when I was doing track. I feel in good shape, but haven't actually ran a mile in a few months. I will do it tomorrow, been so busy..

I'm a little late on this one but wanted to give it a go.

Did 100 pushups (nose to floor to elbows straight) and 100 situps (shoulder to floor, to chest to knees) in around a minute and a half. It then took me another ten minute to finish the other 100 situps. I dont even know if I counted right, I was just thinking 'f*** me! did NM mean stomach crunches?'

Total time 11.04 mins.

Hopefully the DLs and run to come later, for lunch.
