Sort of an off-the-wall post. Curious to know what people on here think about this physique - which is frequently considered by many to be the male human ideal.

who considers this to be the male ideal physique? If this statue was a person, I'd tell him to "eat.. and start squatting and doing pullups".

Funny that David would be considered an ideal, considering he is supposed to be a teen. For a teen quite nice, bodes well for turning into a nicely built man. FYI, his proportions are way off, as he is meant to be looked at from below, there are numerous artist proportioning techniques used in his construction, so that when he is viewed in person from underneath, it "reads" properly. I am truly biased, I really do dig the Grecian ideal. MAN = see below

TheSilverFox who considers this to be the male ideal physique? Thats what "they" say. Who are "they?" I don't know... just "them." Seriously though, art historians, etc. In written texts, the statue will frequently be described with something like, "michelangelo's depiction of the human male ideal, David..." Different perspectives... intrigue me...

ahh ic ic. funny how an artists depiction of the male ideal is much different than a body builders depiction of the male ideal. what the normal world sees as "in shape" is pretty much nothing IMO. i have somewhat high standards b/c I know what we're all capable of. Very few are willing to put in the discipline and hard work to get these results though.

But it never was considered the male idea... at least not when it was made. David is a boy, that is the point, it is David from David and Goliath. It is the depiction of a young males strength over someone much more physically bigger and stronger than he. It is a symbol of strength and triumph of will, and defiance not physical perfection, it never was meant to be that. His legs are rendered small so that when you look up at him, he is proportioned more correctly, his hands and head on the other hand are relatively gigantic. His penis and depicted penises of the time are all rendered small, dare I say tiny, as that was the "fashionable" penis of the time. Large male genitalia was considered brutish, unattractive, and animalistic, not civilized. I have to go home tonight and look at my old texts, do they really really site it as male ideal.???? I have a Bachelors of fine art, I am an artist, and I don't remember that..... I could be wrong though side line I totally wanna smack his tiny little underdeveloped butt, just once, ... ok maybe a couple times ; )

Michelangelo made the penis small as to not draw attention to it, at least from my understanding.
