Critique My 5 x 5 meets Max Ot Routine - Friday, February 27, 2009 6:10 AM ( #1 )
I'm just coming off 4-6 weeks of german volume training and it's time to switch things up. I want to maintain if not build on my muscle, but also trim some stubborn tummy fat.

Here's my initial thought on my new routine. Very 5 x 5ish meets Max Ot:

Day 1 -- Push Pull Horizontal

* Flat Barbell bench 5 x 5
* Seated cable row or bent over rows 5 x 5
* Incline DB bench 5 x 5
* Weighted dips 5 x 5
* DB flies isolation: 3 x 8
* Mop up with some abs

Day 2 -- Legs, Abs, Bis, Tris

* Squat 5 x 5
* Leg Press 5 x 5
* Weighted lunges 3 x 8 or curls or calves
* 5 x 5 skullcrushers
* 5 x 5 Press downs
* 5 x 5 bi curls
* 5 x 5 preacher or hammer curls

(Note: Alot in here. Actually thinking arms could have it's own day)

Day 3 -- Vertical push pull

* Weighted pull ups 5 x 5
* DB Shoulder press 5 x 5
* Upright rows or shrugs 3 x 8
* Side laterals 3 x 8
* Lat pulldowns 3 x 8
* Mop up with some abs

How does this look?

One big question -- cardio. I keep hearing mixed ideas here. Some say go long and slow while others say go short and intense. What makes the most sense here?

Thanks.

on the bi/tri isolation exercises i would do 3x8-12 (which you do for most).  other than that it looks good.  cardio wise you could do either or really.  I think HIIT works better, or you could run a couple of miles after you lift.  I run about 2-4miles after i lift and mix sprints in during the run and it works good at burning fat and not muscle postworkout

Thanks much.

I like running about as much as I like eating dirt. Don't think that's going to happen.

What could I do say on a stairmaster or eliptical? I could do speed intervals. And how long should I do the cardio? Post or pre workout?

Lots of cardio questions...I don't want to burn away the muscle.

Thanks Ranger.

stairmaster and elipticals should be fine.  Really do what cardio you like best but HIIT works best imo.  HIIT is short intervals, say fast for 30 seconds then slow for 30 or fast 20 slow 10. what ever works best for .  The better shape you get in the longer you can do it and you can use shorter slow periods and longer fast periods.    I say start off at around 4-8 minutes intervals, with warm up and cool downs.  Do it post workout and /or first thing in the morning on non lifting days.

you could also do tabata cardio, its interval training, should be a couple of threads in the training section if you want to dig for it
