Creatine + IBU Profin - Wednesday, November 05, 2008 1:55 PM
I took a few IBU Profens once for pain with my creatine and it was one of the best workouts I have ever had. Is there any science behind this? Is it good/bad? I assume there is some huge reason this is bad (other than IBU is acid), just wondering why?

Last I heard nsaids decrease growth hormone so they should not be beneficial for muscle mass.

But then again I read a study showing that they acctually increase muscle mass in elderly people.

I don't think you'll find any conclusive info on the effects of ibuprofen on work outs to be honest.

Was it straight ibuprofen?

They inhibit COX mechanisms which help reduce prostaglandins...However prostaglandins can be useful for physiological function.

It could simply be placebo, or just a rather good lifting day, or the creatine itself finally starting to work

Yeah, it was just a handful of ibu profen, and by a great lifting day I meant  not that it was extra intense but that I was simply stronger... thanks ill look into those things..

I was thinking maybe i was somehow numbed from the lactic acid? Is that possible?

i heard that ibuprofen, being an anti inflamitory, might reduce swelling of the muscle after micro damage is done from a workout. I haven't taken any AIs since i heard the swelling ibuprofen, tylenol or advil takes away is actually needed to make the muscle larger..but im not 100% on that.

I'm a good boy, I did my research.

Here you go, a scientific study on ibuprofen and its effects on muscle hypertrophy:

Supps: GNC Mega Men, Fish Oils (Omega3 High Concentrate Blend), Flaxseed Oil, VitalStrength Total Protein, Spirulina.

Deadlift: 315lbs for 4 reps. W00T!

And here's one that concludes in Ibuprofen providing more oxidative stress on the body by the end of a run.

I think in small doses it doesn't make a noticeable negative impact on protein synthesis.
But at large doses it does, rats given ibuprofen show decreased hypertrophy.

There's so factors involved thought. For example ibuprofen can increase gastrointestinal permeability, which might be a preworkout benefit in itself.

But really I think if you have to use nsaids, I would prefer aspirin over ibu. Better not to use any.
