Crazy Clicking knee - Wednesday, June 20, 2007 4:51 AM
Hello everyone! I'm just looking for a bit of help really to see if anyone else has had the same sort of thing as i have now, but right.
Few months back my knee started clicking terribly, it sounds like velcro sometimes but then other times its just a popping sound - It only occurs when I put weight on it - for instance going up stairs (going down there's no clicking at all - weather it's the range of movements different i dont know). I do play Inline Hockey aswell, but it doesn't bother me then....It doesn't hurt, only a couple of twinges when it's cold or when i haven't quite warmed up properly, there's no swelling, no redness....However i was quite fond of squats and leg extensions (although i've been advised to not use the machine with heavy weights) and my job does require me to be on my feet all day moving around.........any thoughts on what it could be?

Thankyou

I had this problem for a long time from wrestling i think and here is what my doctor told me and did.

Your knee cap is supposed to be smooth very very very smooth and you can damage the hard cartlage on the outside of the actuall knee cap and so it doesn't rotate smoothly which causes the clicking knee. If it doesn't hurt then it's not hurt that bad nd there is nothing you can do but if it is hurting they can do a orthoscopic surgery and try and smooth it out the best they can but it will never be "perfect" that's what i had done and most the clicking is gone but still in pain.

Surgery doesn't sound good at all, I think this all stems from using the Leg extensions machine at the Gym - remember I went quite heavy one time n' i think my knee didn't really like that, I just having a little prod around 'cause i've been on my feet all day it's a little sensitive if i prod the inside where the ligaments join the knee cap, that and i played hockey yesterday so i could've picked up a knock from there..... - if that's any help at all to clarify the problem. I just hope it's nothing like cartilage wearing away or something....I'm going to get it checked out Monday - surgery would be the absolute worst thing

another thing though - when i sit down and flex n' bend my knee it doesn't click at all....

and extra thoughts?

its most likely a permanent injury, and it might limit you a lot in sports and when you do leg excersises, I have a permanent problem with my knee which limits my performance in most sports eg i'm not as fast as I'm meant to be, can't get as much power from my legs. Really f***ed up as I could have gone pro if I didnt get injured.

yeah i'm taking it REALLY easy as far as weight training on my legs goes, i'm carrying on playing hockey though because it doesn't bother me then.
thinking back though i do think it the leg extension machine is the root of my problem
