Could a really bad sunburn have a negative effect on lifting? - Monday, July 20, 2009 3:10 PM ( #1 )
the other week (monday) i benched 190 3x3 and over the weekend i went to warped tour and got a REDICULOUSLY bad sun burn. I mean really bad. And today i went to bench and barely got 185 3x3. The burn doesnt really hurt ne more but it is really noticable and..well u can tell its really bad. I kno itsnot my calorie intake becuase within the past week ive been eating soooo much.(like 1500 to 2000 calorie meals) and im only 145 lbs. and ive been having steady gains only eating like 2000 calories a day so that has been a big improvement.but ne way do u think this was y i did poorly today? thanks

I doubt it, afterall it's just burning of the top layers of skin, shouldn't affect the muscles in any way.

Do you think the sun could have dehydrated you?  I've been trying to get a tan and have gotten some headaches lately which I think may be dehydration from being in the sun too much and not drinking enough water.  Also did you consume any alcohol?

It won't affect directly. Unless you have sun poisoning then you'll feel like ****.

But it could have minor affects, like if it was on your neck and shoulders, squats would be a bitch.

Yeah, a sunburn drains your energy.  Ever noticed that you get real tired after getting burned?

Drink water.

Of course it will effect you.  Chrissakes, people!  your skin is only the largest organ in your body for crying out loud.  Any kind of systemic trauma taxes your immunity, and that means less resources applied to rebuilding muscle.

Think of the downstream implications: it may not immediately knock 100 Lbs off your squat max, but swelling and inflammation will jack with your electrolyte balance, throw off your hydration, and confuse your body's temperature regulation mechanisms.  All of that will add up to a malaise that can hurt your motivation and intensity in the gym.

Don't take your skin for granted just because you're not blasting it directly with reps.

I paid through the nose for it, LOL

The secret to a long-lasting, even, and natural-looking fake bake is threefold:
  1. Patience (moderation)
  2. Aftercare (frequent exfoliation, constant hydration, etc)
  3. Persistence
I usually take a full month of sessions to spin up to a good "base" tan at my local salon.  The first two weeks, I hit half the maximum time alternating between stimulating and bronzing beds (or stand up units), and I only go once every 48 hours.  For the second two weeks, I bump it up to every 24 hours, and over the course of the second month, I ramp those visits up to the maximum time permitted.  Like I said, it takes a lot of patience to be moderate about it.  You can very easily bake yourself to a crispy bronze in less time than that, but the first year I did that I spent most of the time flaking and battling splotchy peeling blemishes.

I don't waste time with bronzing lotions either -they smell like a$$ and tend to develop pigmentation on a very shallow layer of the dermis that always ends up on your bath towels within a few days.  Not to mention what it does to your bed linens.

Once you have a good rhythm going, you can drop back to twice or thrice weekly visits to top off.  In fact, I'm due for a little sizzle this afternoon.

Outside the salon, it's all about SPF.  Kinda silly to pay for fake sun and then pay even more to shield yourself from the real deal, but there ya go.  For me, the tan is like any other aspect of the bodybuilding ethic -you build it under controlled circumstances, so that upon presentation, it looks like it comes naturally.  And, as we all know, NOTHING in this game is left to chance.

Due to budgetary constraints, I'll take my melanoma the old fashioned way.  I never would have thought about towels and sheets with the fake stuff.  Thanks for the heads up on that!

Make sure you don't ever get burned like that again. A couple severe burns like that can easily result in skin cancer if you are fair skinned. Maybe not now but when you are older.  No joke.
