Hi everyone.. hope you are all well.... I have an extremely tough question here... I thought I would give it a shot and ask you guys here. No one can give me any answers- not even my family doctor. What are some possible reasons or health issues as to why someone's body may be HOLDING bodyfat??? Let's take out the nutrition aspect- since I have a nutritionist who has put me on an excellent food plan. Let's also take out the "starvation" idea- because it's pretty common sense to say when you starve yourself your body holds what fat it can. I would also like to cross out drinking WATER... because I have read many websites on the importance of drinking water for fat loss. Like I shared before- I have hypothyroidism- but I have been treated with medication and my numbers look normal on my bloodtests. My doc is happy with them. So I think I have to rule that out too. I have heard of something called "cortisol"... when your body is stressed it can raise the cortisol levels which make it difficult for your bodily functions to get rid of stored bodyfat. Is there anyone that may have some ideas or experiences with this on a health standpoint?

I don't have personal experience with it, but I do know that cortisol is a stress hormone that likes to hang out in the abdomen. Needless to say, the more stressed you are, the higher levels of cortisol you will have. Since that hormone likes to collect in the abdominal region, you will notice a difference in the ability to get rid of that bulge. Try meditation, yoga, or find the root of your stress and attempt to eliminate it or reduce it. There is something out there called CortiSlim that claims to fix this problem but I've never tried it so I don't know anything about it. Good Luck.

The reason you have to drink a lot of water is because your body's fat is flushed out of the system. The reason you lose weight (in the form of fat) is because your body "burns it" for energy, but it's not a clean process and you excrete the by-products and sometimes breathe them out. Only about 3 methods for effectively removing toxins from your body. Some people's bodies are just more efficient than others and store onto fat more easily, so over a period of years, their intake is more than their output (not always, but sometimes even with eating the exact same foods!), so their weight creeps up. Some people's bodies closely match their intake with their output and stay the same weight for years, and sometimes decades. I saw on tv a doctor actually claiming that there is actually a virus that a body contracts which makes them gain weight or hold onto it so well. It's an interesting theory. "I'm not fat, I'm just sick" would be a new excuse people would use. Is this question for you or for a friend? You look amazing in your picture.

The doctor who claims there is a fat virus was discussed in the below thread. Very interesting, to say the least. http://www.discussbodybuilding.com/Can_you_%22catch%22_a_fat%3F/m_31469/tm.htm

Germyboy- thank you and yes that's me in the picture.. I'm not overweight.. but I'm trying to get in tip-top shape and it seems I may have "plateau-ed"... I'm trying to get rid of some stored fat on my thighs and butt and chisel my stomache more. Maybe I am just not going to lose anymore bodyfat. I'm apparently 22%, so I didn't think it was un-reasonable to drop to about 19-20%? I do have hypothyroidism, but my doctor says my #'s are fine right now.. so I am wondering what else my problem could be? I've been working out for over 6 months and have DRASTICALLY improved my diet.. but I can't seem to improve. I used to be around 17-18% bodyfat about 2 years ago- so I know it's possible.. I just don't ever remember having to try this hard to get in shape.. It's very frustrating.

What does your dietary sodium look like? Is it possible that you are talking about water retention? Does it fluctuate with your cycle? Are you on a weightlifting regimen or cardio? Have you been switching up your workout? How is your sleep? How stressful is your life? Do you like answering questions? How do you like these questions?

Have you considered trying a cutting diet like many of the pros do to get in "shape" for competitions? Basically it's Atkins or another low-carb solution for 8-12 weeks.

One quick note: I JUST read that you should NOT alter your cortisol levels...too low and you could die. I would stay away from any kind of altering medication. You probably don't want to mess with that.

i was in almost the same position as you and this is what i did to drop. right now i'm at 11%. - constantly eating small meals, nuts, baby carrots, lots of yogurt, fruit, salads -dramatically increased cardio from 30 min jog 4 days a week to 30 min intense cardio cycles 3 days and 45 min slow jogs 4 days. (cardio is healthy everyday and should incorporate a good stretching session to promote recovery.) keep up resistance training and try changing your routine. if you have a regular session get your trainer to suggest a new circuit that will work the same muscle groups in different ways, you may have just hit a plateau there and it's preventing your fat loss %. don't be afraid to lift heavier weights, (you'd have to try really hard to get bulky) and try maxing out in the top 1/4 of your range, meaning, if you max bench 110, get on a smith machine and set the bar in the top 1/4 of your range (or about 4 inches of movement) and press (it should be very easy) in that space to muscle exhaustion. take a few days off for recovery and then do it again with 105-110% of you max weight. keep raising the weight for 2-3 weeks and then try maxing out on the full bench again. It should be 105-115% of your old max. This technique is possible for any target and amazingly effective in a short amount of time. Increased lean muscle=fat loss=change in muscle:fat ratio=lower body fat % hope this helps!

I think you have a good plan, there, oh ripped female, but I take issue with cardio. I think high intensity interval weight training is much more effective. I have been on the Optimum Anabolics program for about 13 weeks now. I had to start over after week 10 because I got sick for two weeks. I was not doing a lick of cardio, but I was unintentionally underdoing it on the diet, taking in about 3000 calories a day. I lost 13 pounds of bodyfat and gained 3 pounds of muscle in 10 weeks. I was trying to bulk up and ended up losing a lot of fat. The OA program is essentially a high rep (8-15) weight training routine set to a very vigorous (30sec-2min) rest schedule. On the tougher weeks you don't have time to regain your breath, but you continue to lift the same amount of weight and increasing sets with super strict form. I can only imagine if I had tried the fat burning regimen included in the program. I would put this workout up against any cardio or fat loss program out there, if you are tough enough.
