I'm already applied, have been since September. I'm already in to three schools, and waiting on a few more. Do all cardiologists have that long of an internship? That's ridiculous, and can't believe its that long.

That's ridiculous, and can't believe its that long. Yes interships and usually that long or longer expecially for that feild. I know that people say you get paid peanuts and i kind of disagree. Its peanuts compared to what you'll be making but its still about 30,000-45,000 a year depnding on field and also where you go. T oget into med school its pretty tough with MCATS and what not and don't expect to go right after you do the four years of college. They dont want some 22 year old kid fresh out of college. Whats your major?
It is not the years in your life, but the life in your years.

He might make 30k-40k yes, but keep in mind he's repaying 200-250k of debt over those 10 years and it becomes barely enought to get by. PearlJammer919 I'm already applied, have been since September. I'm already in to three schools, and waiting on a few more. Do all cardiologists have that long of an internship? That's ridiculous, and can't believe its that long. Yes they all have to do a long internship. Some fields of medicine take up to 15 years. It's not ridicolous when you consider the level of responsibility involved. I don't get how you're saying you allready got accapted. You may have got accepted into an undergraduate program like a bachelor's or pre-med that meets the requirements of med schools, but an 18 year old has not gotten into med school. You need to do well on an MCAT in your fourth undergraduate year which is extremely hard, you need to have at least a 3.8 gpa to stay competitive, and you need to have done tons of extra curricular activities showing dedication to medicine. That you need to show good communication skills at interviews, because there will always be applicants with better qualifications then you, some people take a couple years of trying to even get in. So yeah you'll need to be pushing yourself to get good grades from the very first year and if you get in, the next 20 years is gonna suck for you. Once you get into internship, you'd be making just enought to get by and working odd hours. Some people get their degree and don't make it throught the internships.

Receiving your undergraduate degree is also not a guarantee that you will be accepted into graduate school. We are not trying to discourage you in fact I am certain that most people here would encourage you. We just want you to prepare yourself for what is a very long road.

PearlJammer919 There are other colleges I am looking at with much less tuition, and I could receive scholarship to(James Madison University-15,000) However, I have had my sights set on PSU since 9th grade and also I need a school that is connected in the medical field. JMU isn't really connected anywhere, and PSU is connected to Jefferson Medical College(A good med school) in Philadelphia. 86,000....no no my friend. Undergraduate will be approx. 96,000 then I am defferring that until after medical school which will be another 100,000. I am looking at a 200,000 dollar debt that must be paid off in 10 years. However, if I'm a cardiologist, I shouldn't have a problem. I will also be working during undergraduate year, probably as a bartender, to start the payoff of the undergrad loan. Med school is 4 years but that doesn't include residency which won't pay well. Do you live in PA? I cannot believe that tuition would be that much in state. UC schools are like 12k for in state if that. I am looking at around the same debt. Dental school is going to be around 300k for four years unless I join the Air force, navy...or find someone that wants to pay for a white male to go to school...haha ya right.

I wanted to comment a bit further on this Pearl as I do not wish you to be discouraged and do not think that anyone else here does either. We just wish you to be prepared for what is a long road ahead of you. Becoming a physician is not an easy thing, becoming a specialist is even more difficult, yet if this is what you really want this life it is certainly possible. I for one encourage you to make the attempt, just know that it will not be easy.

Seemed very high to me as well. Last I knew Illinois universities were much cheaper than that and some Illinois schools are top-notch (U of I, Western, SIU-Number one party school in country but excellent engineering and med schools).

I am not accepted to Medical school. Never did I say that. Undergraduate is what I am already accepted to. I understand that the MCAT is one of the deciding factors as well as GPA for medical school. My major will be Pre-Med, and I am contemplating joing the Navy for the 5-year medical duty they have which will in turn have them pay for medical school. This is just a thought, but would also lessen the debt by a crapload.

Also, if a deciding factor for medical school was an interview, good god would I be accepted. I rock interviews, and I am mr. personality when it comes to socialization. An interview, would be a gift that I would take FULL advantage of. I am no closet book-worm.

I have a few friends that have great GPAs and good MCAT scores and they are going to continue in school to get a masters and hopefully get in after that because they have not gotten in yet. Don't let anyone discourage you though. If that is your goal right now then go for it. You find out very quickly when you get into upper level bio and chem if you can hack it. A lot of people turn back after ochem and biochem if they didn't do well if they even pass and reevaluate what they want to do and what they are able to do. Struggling through those courses would surly mean you would struggle in medical school and they know that. That is why getting good grades in the required courses is so important. One more thing. Get great grades in the beginning. I messed around my first year of college because I didn't know what I wanted to do. It is much more difficult to raise your GPA in biochem and ochem and pchem then it is to raise it in those worthless core classes. I have to make up for what I did my first semester and it makes it that much more difficult. Schools recognize change in GPA over semesters but it is much better to jsut have it then it is to explain it. Good luck and try and have fun at the same time. Just don't sleep through your classes for a semester and end up with a 2.5 because it doesnt average well later on. lol

biochem is a biatch, along with molecular biology (which youll also probably be doing given molecular bio is used for genetic disease diagnoses etc) I got 2 A+, and thought it was easy, then came the dreaded day when i got a D @_@ Then i slapped myself silly, but my next grade was a B. I ballsed that up, its haaaaard work, and not something you can...learn...you gotta be good at it like redjeep says, unfortunately its not a subject you can simply read and reword and understand, you need to get a decent "birds eye view" of the subjects entire cycle (i use the term cycle metaphorically) and know how to manipulate it and tie them together to get the good grades, and for some strange reason, just like art, english etc, at these levels, you either have it or you dont, no amount of reading and extra hard work really ever bumps the grades up, and your understanding of principles reach there limits and you start pulling your damn hair out when you dont get something, and it can take ages to fully grasp the situation, usually an amount of time you literally do not have to acquire a very nice grade. But hey man like redjeep also said (i feel like im just repeating what red said LOL) dont let anyone discourage you, none of us really actually truly know you on these boards so we know little of your true potential and what youre like, so go for it, never know if you never try

HaHaHa My daughters tuition was $28,500 per year .....not including room and board....she HAD to live off campus because of her pets....LOL....so I basically footed the 600 a month for rent ....she worked to pay the rest of her bills.....so it was like $134,000 plus rent.....HaHaHa....we didn't qualify for any financial help....LOL...It blows, but It is over now.... I've got 8 years before My ten year Daughter will be going off to college......Then ...Luckily I'll be done!

In highschool, I have a 3.7 GPA and I honestly have never read a book in english, never opened the text book in history, and never honestly did anything. I would say that I haven't studied since 8th grade, and I got a 3.7 with mainly AP/Honors courses. I have now taken the hardest AP course, Biology, cause I know it will be a core class my first semester in college. I understand this stuff, but as expected; it's alot of reading which is fine because the fact that it's real I find to be fxckin amazing.-For instance: while on the bike today, I actually thought of glycolysis making glucose into pyruvate and then the pyruvate losing Carbon Dioxide to then be attached to coenzyme A=Acetyl CoA which then goes through the citic acid cycle to make ATP, and release hydrogen ions to make FADH and NADH to carry down the electron transport chain to then pass Hydro ions across the mitchondrion membrane into ATP synthase for chemiosmosis which makes a crap load of ATP-WHICH ALL is energy to propel me on the stationary bike. Hahahahahaha, wow I can't believe I just typed all that out. Gotta say, it's awesome though. And I expect it to be extremely hard, but I have never said this, "I want to learn more about this" or "Bio is awesome cause it's real. It's not the past which is intangible, it's real and occuring now."-I'm not a nerd mind all of you, I just find this stuff to be pretty sweet.

And for the record, I just transferred in the AP Bio class. As in I am 10 chapters behind the entire class and I am expected to make it all up. Call me nuts, no. I call it a test to see if I can do it, and so far, I'm doin it baby.
