Cold or not - Saturday, July 12, 2008 7:16 PM
On the protein shake labels it says to serve cold and to drink immediatly.

What is the purpose for serving cold? Does it preserve the flavor, or does it add more protein or maby just make it more enjoyable?

I did search this BTW

makes it more enjoyable and cold water is absorbed by your body faster than water at room temperature, as it is passed through the stomach faster to the small intestines

I've heard both sides. Some say what SC does and some say that the water needs to be heated first but basically, just drink it how you like it.
Cold ftw IMO

Cold beverages need to be heated to be utilized by the body, this creates a thermic effect and can burn off some extra calories.  This proccess isn't very time consuming so I wouldn't worry about the nutrient absorbtion.  Creatine mono is absorbed better in warm fluids.

I was told by one of my friends who is now out of the marines, that they make you drink ice cold water because your body has to heat the ice cold water up, therefore burning more calories? Either way i like my stuff cold or room temp anyways, all i do is chug it down so i really dont mind haha.

yes stone. he's completely right.   especially about the absorption/temperature thing.

when you're parched and need water, try drinking hot water.   it doesn't make you feel better right away.

then try cold water.    you'll see why the cold temperature makes you feel better almost instantly.  the cool temperature is absorbed MUCH faster

i have had a HOT whey shake before (not by choice haha)... and it was horrible.  i almost threw up on the way home.  it did NOT sit well at all.

Mark was talking about having cold water which very slightly boosts your metabolism because the water has to be heated to body temp before it can be absorbed.
They want cold water w/ the protein because it will taste better, NOT because it will be absorbed faster if it is cold water.

Drinking cold water does feel better expecially after a workout because it brings down your core temp slightly while the heat from your body is absorbed into the water making it body temperature.

Water that is cold has less kinetic energy, meaning it will have less collisions with other molecules and is less active. It will absorb slower into cells because it has less kinetic energy until it heats up to body temp. Water that is at body temperature will have more kinetic energy, meaning more collisions with other molecules and it will diffuse across cell memebranes quicker than a colder substance.

The difference is slight but cold water is not absorbed quicker, it is less efficient and requires energy to heat up, that is why it boosts your metabolism slightly.

The coldness of the water is purely to make the drink taste better.

yes cold water requires your body to heat it there fore buring a very little bit of extra calories off notice the words
verylittle

so yea room temp water is easier to absorb
