Cheap weights - Wednesday, April 01, 2009 9:35 PM ( #1 )
I am currently building a home gym and am looking for the cheapest plates I can get. Any suggestions? I have already tried looking in local papers and things of that sort but I am not coming up with much. Any suggestions on any online sources?

Would be interesting to see your list of equipment.

To save cash, keep it to the very essentials and work to acquire/make each one at the lowest price.

Try haggling with stores. See what negotiating with store managers could do for you. If they want your custom, they will have to beat the internet prices. Then there is also the possibility of second hand equipment. I bet there are suppliers of refurbished gym equipment around.

Or maybe RobertN could make and post you some bits if you ask him nicely.

What do you have and how much do you want? Im mainly looking for plates, standard or olympic. Maybe we should get a classifieds forum thing on here. Im sure people have stuff to get rid of/trade.

Craigslist FTW!  I have picked up a couple 300# Olympic sets (bar included) for $100 each.  My best buy was a full Weider Oly set with a sweet bench for $100.  I built a rack that I can do squats, banch press and O/H press from and the bench fits it perfectly.

Try crazedlist.org, and you can search many areas at once.  There are always Oly sets in my area for $85-$150.  Use "Olympic" or "weights" or "workout" to search with.

Just for grins, I found a Weider Oly set with a bench, a curl bar and dumbbells in Hilton Head for $200.

Call some gyms and health clubs to see if they are rotating out any equipment.  Tell them what you want, they might have something or know of something.

Thanks for the plug Spenny!

Hello there,
I was also wondering how can I get the cheapest weights, because, I don't have much money, so I made them from conctere. You can have a look at the video I made http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNpDats7kBs

In the end 100kg weights cost me lower than $10, because you need only sand and cement..and a little patience :)
Of course the concrete weights have many disadvantages to the metal ones, but this is what you can get for these money :)
