Changing eating habits - Monday, April 07, 2008 9:51 AM ( #1 )
My girlfriend is trying to lose about a stone. She has just joined a gym and has a pretty decent looking routine going. The only problem is her diet, she is just finishing university at 24 and has lived on processed sugar, rubbish carbs and fruit juice for the past 5 years. I don't know how my diet would work for her. She's not really looking to build muscle and she is restricted in what exercises she can do because of arthritis in her knees and elbow. Could anyone suggest a diet to help her lose weight?. She is pretty reluctant to change her eating habits.

Hi! I am definately not a proffessional, but you don't need one to tell you that processed foods and high sugar and carbs will not help your girlfriend to lose weight. It can be very difficult to change a lifetime of eating like this, but it does not have to be all or nothing. Start small-maybe trade one or two sodas or juices a day for some water. Look into some lower fat or lower sugar snacks. Eat more chicken and fill her plate with a bigger portions of veggies and smaller portions of carbs. I don't know if walking is a problem, but she definately should aim for at least 30 minutes of cardio at least 3 times a week. 5 or 6 Smaller meals may also work better than eating 3 large meals a day. Basically, when it comes to diet, she just needs to make smarter choices. She doesn't have to cut out all of her favorite things, but she should definately eat smaller portions of those and limit them to maybe once a day until she can get used to having them less. It will take some time, but being healthy is a lifestyle, and once she is on that path, she will feel and look great. Good luck!
