Changes you make when bulking up - Thursday, April 16, 2009 1:11 AM ( #1 )
having read but rarely commented on some of the bulking up threads, i became interested to know what changes you make from an actual maintenance diet? i ask because without sounding patronising, im a bit concerned by some of the more inexperienced lifters claiming that they add upto 4pounds a week, but seem a bit oblivious to the fact that at least 75% of this will simply be fat.
anyway, heres mine.

for breakfast i normally have a bowl of all bran and a protein shake mixed with water. this is substituted for two slices of peanutbutter on toast OR four scrambled eggs, plus a protein shake mixed with 0% milk when bulking.

mid morning snacks remain the same.

lunch remains the same plus one extra banana.

pre-workout remains the same

post workout i have one small glass of fresh orange plus a scoop of whey mixed with water when maintaining. when bulking i keep the orange, but use two scoops and 0% milk.

dinner remains the same.

i may or may not have a small amount of cottage cheese before bed.

very minor differences equal to 500-600 calories a day, or one pound a week. when gains slow, i will add another egg or another slice of toast to breakfast, or substitiute the 0%milk to 2% milk.

i suppose the point i am trying to make is that filling your face with junk is not the answer to gaining mass. anyway, what changes do you make?

changes I make, I make sure I am never really hungry, and if I get there I make sure to consume something.  Also when bulking I never go to bed starving. I gain 1-2 lbs depending on what I am trying for and at what point of a bulk I am at.  Right now I am at the end of a faster bulk going to take it slow for almost a year and hopefully add 20 lbs of muscle so shooting for either 0-.5 lbs gained a week, if I have 0 that is fine because it won't hurt to get rid of a little fat if I am that lucky.

20lbs a year should produce quite a good lean percentage.
i started this on monday and the change has been seamless because the vairations are so minor.

I just add to the amount of what i already eat.Say when im not bulking i eat 1 cup of oatmeal an 2 eggs for breakfast. But when i start a bulk i eat 1 1/2 cups of oatmeal w/3 eggs.Same goes for the rest of my meals throughout the day.

i pretty much do what jlp does, just add a little bit more of what i already eat.   usually when i go on an actual "bulk" i eat around 300-500 extra calories...nothing to crazy, i might add in some extra fruit too depending on if i want something sweet or not

lots and lots of whole foods. eggs, fruit, vegetables, whole wheat, meat and dairy. that's really about it.

I think what most people dont understand is that when bulking it doesnt mean go out and eat mcdonalds and KFC joe smoe fast food place and just eat and eat. Its simply eating more calories then your bodys maintenance level requires so you can build muscle.

Its sad to say but I think you were on to something, I remember reading a thread about some one gaining an enormous amount of weight in about a month. Unless your on the juice, that just aint happening.

I think the biggest problem most people have besides not realizing how important diet really is, is taking the time to figure out what their bodys maintenance levels are and adjust from there.

No one wants to take the time to measure out serving sizes because they feel ridiculous, but honestly its one of the smartest things i have ever done. One example is cereal, even if its good cereal most people dont even realize how small one cup or 3/4 of a cup (normal servings) really is. They pour a bowl of cereal and realiztically its like 3-4 servings and even though it may be good for you cereal, thats still calories, a lot that you dont even realize your taking in. Thats not even including the milk...

Seriously taking like 1-2 weeks to get used to measuring things out like 2 table spoons of peanut butter, or 1 cup of milk, 1 cup of rice etc... its not that hard.

but anyway, Im back to strength training (even though im sick atm) and bulking, but im pretty much eating the same things, just more of them for the most part. Instead of consuming around 2,000 cals a day im up to around 3,000-3,100 right now which is a little over maintenance. Biggest thing is I am eating more carbs, but on a more specific level your ratios will always change depending on goals and circumstances.

this is basically exactly what i am getting at. dirt food or clean food, eathing way too much over your maintenance (which takes very little time to figure out anyway) will make you get fat, and there seem to be too many threads in here were young guys are gaining 20lbs in 4-5 weeks.
