Carpal tunnel syndrome - Friday, June 09, 2006 4:04 PM
Okay everyone I have carpal tunnel and I just found out from the doctors. I have to wear a wrist brace and he didn't really say when I could start working out again, but does anyone have any tips on this issue?

Well the best way to get your answer is to call your doctor and ask him.

The thing with carpal tunnel is that its just annoying - itll go away for a bit, do something even a little strenous and itll come back up again. So it can be a real pain in the ass.

My suggestion - for a fit young healthy active male - get it surgically repaired. The repair itself doesnt take long to do and you only spend a 3-4 weeks off the gym. Itd be worth it in the long run.

Those 3-4 weeks off gym could give your body a nice break plus itll stop your hand playing up for the long time.

Talk to your doctor about your surgical options - emphasise that you are VERY active and that the hand is really limiting your level of activity.

I have the same problem in my wrist. I wonder how dangerous the surgery is. I would not want my hand all jacked up for the rest of my life.

Ive done a few of these surgeries myself and i can tell you... all the people ive done it one are very happy with the results.

You just have to be good with you rehab and make modification (e.g. ergonomic keyboard/mouse pad, chair, desk, brace etc)

I play keyboards. Should I look into doing this or could this mess up my hands to where I can not play?

No, i dont think u understood what i meant.

I meant that i PERFORMED the surgeries (i.e. i was the guy with the knife slicing up the other guy).

And yes, most of them are still as active as they were before the surgery. Do they workout? i couldnt tell you.

Its quite a common condition. If you do everything right, you might not need to go as far as surgery.

The only sure way of fixing this though is surgery BUT in a small number of cases, it can happen again. The best person to talk to is your doctor.

Its not too serious, but you must make modification such as the ones i mentioned above.

psychomuscleman, if you play a lotta keyboard/piano, doing the simple things can prevent/lessen the burden of this condition - e.g. ensuring you are seated high enough so your wrists arent ****ed all the time, doing regular wrist exercises etc etc.

Your physio is the best person to approach about modifications.

I started using wrist supports when I am playing for long periods and when working on the computer for a long time. This helps but sometimes it just flares up and is a problem.

Regular doctors seem to say, "stop doing these things" and that is it. I can not stop playing and exercising.

What kind of doctor do I need to talk to? Is that a physiologist. Let me know so I can get a doctor to reccomend me to one. Is a chiropractor any help or are there some alternatives?

No i hadnt heard of that before.

The person you need to see is a general surgeon. You probably need to get referred to one by your GP. Talk to your local doctors about how you cant stop doing these things because they are very important to you and ask if you could see a surgeon to get it repaired.

I had carpel tunnel surgery"endoscopic release" and I still work out and play bagpipes, whistles, flutes, etc... My right hand "surgery hand" has less strength in it than my left but not much.. My doctor told me after the surgery.. Use it or loose it... Of course after the 3-4 week healing period and therapy....
