Cardio Question
-
Wednesday, April 23, 2003 9:08 AM
I' m going to start cutting now, and I have a question about cardio workout. Right now, I' m riding the bicycle at the gym (right after weight lifting) for 20 minutes and I burn off about 330 calories. Is this enogh? If I want to make it more effective, should I ride for 25 (or more) minutes with the same speed, or should I ride for 20 minutes with more speed? How many calories should I burn?

i try to avoid doing more than 20 mins of post strngth training cardio work, mainly ' cause i want protein in my system fast, and don' t want to go catabolic and eat my gains. if you want more cardio, you can split days, or do some as a warm up. i do 10 mins to start before weights and 10 mins after, all at around 70% of max bpm. when i' m cutting, i still do the slow warm up, and do 20 mins cool down but i use high intensity intervals. on a bicycle i set the level so i' m around 70% of my maxHR at 80-85 rpm and forevery 60 seconds rest i sprint 15 seconds as hard as i can (105-110 rpm, usually) 15 min of this and 5 min cool down (70%) before my stretch and walk home Rob

I think 20 to 30 minutes after weight lifting is just fine. That' s what I do and I usually take a protein shake right after lifting and before cardio or right after cardio. I am not sure which is better.

I have a related question: When is the best time to do cardio in order to minimize muscle loss? Before lifting? after lifting? On a different day? Also what should I eat and drink before/during/after cardio to ensure that my body isn' t eating my muscles? Thank you. ~Mike

The best time to do cardio is first thing in the morning on an empty stomach,if this isn`t possible do at least a half hour immediately after training.Twenty minutes is not enough if you are trying to get cut unless you are at a relatively low body fat % to begin with.To get ripped try 5 x wekly if you don`t notice a change increae by one day and don`t forget to keep calories and junk food to a minimum.
