Can running burn muscle?? - 3/26/2007 8:19:13 AM

I was looking at pictures of me from last summer...about 10 months ago or so, and I noticed how my jaw stuck out and how my face had virtually no fat on it. That was nice, but that was also before I started weightlifting.

Because I have bulked up in muscle, I've also bulked up in fat. I'm bigger than I was, but I have a lot more muscle than I did. However, looking at those pictures made me want to lose my fat.

So say I run about a mile and a half each day and continue with my usual weightlifting routine. Will this make sure I keep my muscle and lose my excess fat??

Cross country style running does burn muscle. Id say stick to sprints, I recently read about something called guerilla cardio (found it somewhere on these forums) it dictates sprinting for 20 seconds at maximum intensity, then jogging for 10, and repeat this process for 5 mins or so. This will burn fat but not muscle.

You have that backwards my friend, you start with a 4 minute warm up jog at 50% of your maximum, then you go into 10 second sprints split by 20 seconds intervals of jogging, again at 50% of your maximum followed again by a 4 minute cool down jog of 4 minutes. Total, 12 minutes.

If you really dedicate to keep up your pace and to really hard sprints it's extremely difficult, very effective, and only takes 12 minutes. I would split up your cardio and weight training days. You could do speed/pylo's/edurence training on the same days as cardio, I would do weight lifting every other day with the cardio ect in the between days.

Don't forget, the most important part to maintaining muscle and burning fat will be your diet and pre/post workout/cardio nutrition.Smile

Search over the forum and read some of Dan's (danmirage) articles. I'm sure any questions you may have will be answered there.

Here is what I follow:

http://www.musclemedia.com/training/hiit.asp

It starts out really short and then increases over time.

Find your maximum heart rate = 220 - your age

For the sprint, you'll want high intensity which should be around 75-85% of your MHR (max heart rate).  Low intensity or jogging should be around 65% of MHR.

This should help a bunch, but as Trick said, a diet is key.  It's also important to only do the HIIT routine above AFTER a workout.

Thanks for the info guys.

But tell me, if I run a mile and a half a day, will I lose muscle? Because it isn't really running a lot, and I'll be keeping up with my old weightlifting routines.

If I do lose muscle, how much do you think?

Running distances at constant speed will make you lose muscle and fat basically. I thought running long distances was the way to go when i was fat. However after i cut down i realised i had lost so much muscle mass and not much fat making me look kinda skinny fat. So yeah if you wanna cut fat do HIIT training. Its really effective.

Again, that's largely dependant on your diet. If you supply your body with the right fuel it won't have to burn as much or any muscle to get the job done. Hence me telling you how important pre and post workout nutrition is. a mile and a half isn't very far, I probably do about that distance atleast doing HIIT.

I tried the HIIT thing today. Damn, was that tiring! But I hope it burns only fat, and lets me keep my muscles.

ANY activity that burns more calories than you need to maintain stable metabolism CAN put you into a state of catabolism or if the session is too strenous.  So yes, it is possible that running if done hard will burn up some muscle.
If your running were a brisk walking session or whatever else kept your heart rate between 55-60% of max that would be better.  You're less likely to force your body into an anaerobic state with the slower activity, and instead burn your lipid and glycogen stores for the energy.

if u wana burn mainly fat not muscle, do the gorrila carido thing on a morning with nothing in your stomach, but take some weigh protein, like some egg whites (no carbs) to really get the fat burning with minimu loss of muscle

Eat right? What would you say eating right is? Like...staying away from fat foods and stuff?

Elaborate more please.

And I am getting stressed about losing muscle. I DON'T want to lose them, I work so hard to gain them!! How would you feel if you just came home from work and got paid, you cashed your check, and on the way home you threw half of your money out the car window?

Eat Right - Read this thoroughly http://www.discussbodybuilding.com/m_111175/mpage_1/tm.htm

Staying away from Fast Foods, Fried/Deep-Fried. Fats are essential when dieting as well but good fats not the bad ones. Stay away from saturated fats but not completely. Good Fats come from Fish oil , flaxseed oil and olive oil to name a few.

Also if fat loss is the goal, Stay away from Dairy products and Bread. If your calorie intake and Diet Ratios were right, you would not lose muscles instead you would gain. Your not gonna lose half your muscle frame if that's what your thinking .
