Can eggs replace whey? - Tuesday, April 07, 2009 11:18 AM ( #1 )
Bottom line-in college. Whey is expensive as ****, even in bulk, and goes quickly. And Im broke.

Are eggs a fast absorbing protein? They're CHEAP (biggest issue here) and protein packed. But would eating like 5 eggs post workout be a good alternative for whey?

casein is pretty slow in getting absorbing into the body. but yea, i guess if u cant afford whey, go for eggs. eggs are nutritious anyways. workout at evenings and eat eggs before going to bed. coz casein will take longer to break down and since u r gonna be fasting through ur sleep, the body will be processing the proteins while u sleeping. u kill 2 birds in one stone.

Eggs do not absorb as fast, but I see not problem with them, but don't eat all the yolks.  Just as a little calculation, 4 eggs = 1 scoop of whey powder, eggs are about a buck a dozen, so it is a buck for 3 servings of protein by way of eggs. So let's call that 33 cents per serving.  Whey protein goes for 52 cents a serving and up.  This is for larger quantities of ON 100% whey (10lb) size.  So yes it is cheaper, but perhaps not as conveniant or portable.  I would say that Costco and Walmart would have Whey powder that rival the price of your eggs.  If you can, use both, only use the whey for post workout and your meats and eggs for the other times and the money should not be an issue.

hey and also boil or fry the eggs. i mean just dont take them raw. coz,

1) Raw eggs could contain poisonous bacteria that might screw ur tummy or cause food poinoning.

2) 82% of the protein is synthesized by the body from boiled eggs, where as only 40% is synthesized from raw eggs.

however, the yolk part would contain essential aminos and also vitamin B something that is good for you. i suggest u eat the egg as a whole and not just the white parts. if u r so very particular in avoiding all the smallest quantities of fats, then prolly u can take only the egg whites and take multi vitamins and amino supps. but then, that will screw ur cost factor and supps are def not the answer to replacing wholesome food items.

Best thing : Eat a 3-4 eggs a day and workout like hell and burn the fat.

btw, take eggs + whey if u can as ryan says

Egg protein is one of the slower digesting proteins. That does not mean that your body will have no protein available for a longer period of time it just means that it will absorb at a slower pace per hour and for a longer period of time. Whey and most any other protein will begin absorption at around the same time but whey will spike AA levels in the blood, meaning you will be absorbing more grams per hour from whey than from egg or casein protein.

You will be fine with only eggs or you could do what optimum suggested and only take whey post workout to conserve.

ive heard that eggs are the highest quality protein you can eat but many people avoid eating the yolk because of the bad erp such as high cholesterol but its good cholesterol not bad and plus might even help you  maintain healthy testerone levels to get the benefit i would say 2 yolks a day should do it.
