Calories from protein

What's up ya'll? I am new to the fourms and had a question concerning calories from protein. I understand that a surplus of carb calories will be converted into fat and stored by the body, but what about the excess calories from protein? Where do they go? This question is derived from the ideology i had that if i eat foods low in fat low in carbs and high in protein that i could there for lose weight and build muscle? Or am i totaly off base? Any advice or critique is welcomed. Thanks for you time.

Protein has 4 calories per gram just like carbs do, and 9 for fats if you were interested. The science behind people losing weight on high protein diets is twofold: 1. Your body uses about 30% of the protein's calories to digest it, as opposed to about 10 to 15% for carbs, and even less for fats. 2. On a low carb diet your muscle glycogen gets depleted and your muscles shed water. Without the glycogen, your muscles can no longer hold the same amount of water, and you will weigh less because of this, but remember this is water weight and not fat that you are losing. When you start up carbs again the water weight will return.
