Calf pain when running - Sunday, September 02, 2007 10:12 PM
Hi,

A few months back, while running on a treadmill, I felt a pop in my left calf muscle.  Afterwards it was like a giant cramp in that calf muscle.  I stopped my running activity and things went back to normal until one day when I was walking in my house and felt that pop again, only worse.  I went to the doctor and he diagnosed a torn calf muscle.  I followed his directions and it healed up.

Recently I was running outdoors and started to feel a bad cramp in the left calf in the same area as the tear.  I eased up and though I was uncomfortable for about 24 hours, it went away.  Well today, after going about 1/2 mile, I started to get that same pain again.

Is there something I can do to avoid this?  How can I make this problem go away or am I just stuck with it?

Thanks!

12 week High Intensity Training program in progress.  Looking to make major gains in mass.  So far, so good.

sounds like the calve needs conditioning work, you need to make sure to stretch it daily, may want to look into to a few deep tissue massage sessions, make sure you are well hydrated and take in appropriate minerals, maybe via a multi?
Calve raises are your option but work different angles, do singles with a dumbbell in your hand, but not til you are okayed by the dr.
Also work on wobble board, single legged, try the calve raises on a sit fit.
Also do some large rom ankle rotations, going as far as you can for the circle, causing rotational stretching hitting the fibers in different states both stretch wise and directional.
When you are fully healed up, you can elevate to a low impact plyometry conditioning with calve leaps and such, done on mats to start.
