Alright I went into gnc a week or two ago to get some a BCAA supp.. i found one, and the guy recommended (yeah i never trust them, they are usually all skinny idiots trying to make commission) this supplement called-
Body Toner - Censor
It says it's supposed to support fat loss, with these "CLAs", the guy says "oh yeah it's gonna help you burn all the stubborn stomach fat faster." Knowing that targeting weight loss is impossible, i dismissed this idea, but I read on the bottle that it has Omega 3's, 6's, and 9's. I have been wanting to get omega's in my diet and so i thought what the hell.. this guy also told me that I could get my money back if i wasn't satisfied so i figured i would consult the experts of DBB and then return it if CLAs are bogus.
What do you think about CLAs? How much omega 3,6, and 9 do you want in a regular diet (i want to know if i'm getting a substantial amount.. or if it's like creatine in NO-X supps lol)?
Here's a website for it for more details - http://www.nutrivea-usa.com/censor.htm
There are two EFA's or essential fatty acids. They are
Linoleic Acid and Alpha-linoleic acid. They cannot be produced by the body. (CLA) Conjugated
Linoleic acid is the diene isomer of Linoleic Acid. Diene meaning it contains double bonds, and isomer meaning it has the same molecular formula. Conjugated just means that there are single bonds between at least 2 of the double bonds on the fatty acid which causes a delocalization of electrons throughout the compound. CLA can be found as mentioned above in diary products, and beef as well as other meat depending on diet.
This being said, there is a lot of research being done to see if CLA causes the breakdown of body fat in humans direcly or how it is related.
I have read a few scientific articles in which blind studies of the effect clearly indicated fat loss in obese human beings. How much depended on the person and I am sure on their diet and activity level. Again, you cannot always trust even scientific articles and studies because many of them are funded by companies in hopes of promoting something. These same types have studies have been done where they supplement obese people with EFA's and again fat loss is seen in a good portion of them. Likely one of the reasons studies have been supportive in proving fat loss in obese is due to a decrease in insulin resistance (pre-diabetes) in obese people when their diets were supplemented with either CLA or a combination of EFAs.
I would focus more on getting your EFAs rather than taking a CLA product. EFA's are essential for fat loss as well as proper function of the body. EFAs make up a significant portion of the brain, being that the brain is composed of nearly 60% lipids and are essential for cellular function and repair (essentially muscle building) as well as many other things.
If you are getting a healthy amount of polyunsaturated fats through your diet, through olive oil, conola oil, walnuts, almonds, leafy green vegetables you are probably fine with EFAs. If you want you could do what Mark suggested and pick up a EFA supplement, something that contains both Alpha-linoleic acid (omega-3) and linoleic acid (omega-6).
How much did you pay for the product you got. And what does it list as being in the product or what is the full name of it (including company), I couldnt find it online.
Also-about GNC. Aside from the few family owned GNCs that have employees that are educated in nutrition and exercise science, most of the people that work there don't know ****. All they know is what they have heard, and what they have read on the back of the products in their store. Most stores have no requirements to work there, other than to try and sell certain products in their store if they want to make commision.
