Hello all, I am new to this site as well as working out. Age: 39 Height 5'9 Weight 160 (Very lean) I am just starting out and look pretty good but I would like to gain some muscle mass approx (15Lbs) I am working out with a 62 year old body builder that has been traing for 20 years. He has me working with weights/Abs 5 days a week with weekends to rest. I currently do not have a cardio program in place. I was approached by a good friend of mine who is a black belt in Brazillian Jui-Jitsu. He said he would like he and I to challenge our bodies to the fullest and work out together very hard for the next 6 months. I would have to sign up for jui-jitsu. Which I always wanted to do. I am sure this would be the best cardio one can receive. My question is If I do this kind of extensive fighting/cardio workout. Will this defeat my chances of gaining my bulk (15 lbs)lifting weights? Will I need to eat much more to compensate for all the energy loss? Thanks, Chris

As long as you take in a good amount of protien, diet good. You should be fine. I ran 2 miles once or twice a week and also boxed about every day. I made 5 pounds of muscle in 2 1/2 months as well as a little fat, but its all gone now.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a completely different animal entirely to other forms of martial arts. You don't get weighed down in silly traditions and displays of respect. It is also very intense as it is practiced as fighting, not forms to prepare for tournaments. It more closely resembles wrestling than karate. Not only that, but you don't have to starve and dehydrate yourself to make weight. I personally believe you will be in fantastic shape after six months of it. This, however, is not a cardio workout. It is anaerobic exercise, just like wrestling. It will build muscle, especially in your upper body. If they don't incorporate some aerobic activity into the practice, you might want to seek your own. In addition, I would suggest adding a leg workout every week including some leg extensions and curls, squats, deadlifts, and calf raises. You don't want to have a great upper body with chicken legs. As far as diet, it is the key to muscle gain. Eat 5-6 small but satisfying meals a day with no sugar, saturated fats, white flour, especially no soda, chips, or other junk food. Check the nutrition forum for more info. Come back with any other questions or just to let us know how you are doing. Welcome to DB!!

How about Karate? I am currently taking up karate and trainings were kinda tough. From what I have read, by working out either cardio or normal work outs, the body will take up energy from the muscles and cause muscle loss unless there are absorbable foods in the body system. How can I prevent muscle loss without eating a lot to compensate for the energy absorbed? Im afraid I'll get appendics if I eat before my training session.

You do not have to worry about burning up muscle at a calorie deficit of only 500. When you go beyond that you enter starvation mode and your body will eat itself up.
