Brihead301's rules on bulking - Monday, December 31, 2007 7:13 AM
This is coming from personal experience from an 8 month bulk.  I guess you could label me an "endomorph".

1.) Do not count calories
2.) If you're the same weight you were last week, you're not eating enough.
3.) Don't let yourself get hungry - when you think you're full, eat some more.  If you start to feel sick from eating too much, you are doing something right.
4.) Don't ever skip a meal - if the only available food happens to be McDonalds, and you haven't eaten in hours then eat McDonalds.  Eat a chicken sandwich if you must, but by all means DO NOT ORDER A SALAD.
5.) Eat stuff that is high in fat because is it calorie dense.  Peanut butter is a beautiful thing.
6.) Eat AT LEAST your bodyweight in grams of protien
7.) Do NOT shoot for 1/2 - 1 lb per week in bodyweight gain.  Pick a weight that you want to be, and do what it takes to reach that weight.
8.) I advocate healthy eating, but I do not advocate the elimination of some good old fatty weight-gain-friendly foods.
9.) LIFT HEAVY WEIGHTS.  Do not waste your time doing light weight, high rep isolation stuff.  Put all your effort into squats, deadlifts, bench presses, pull-ups, rows, overhead presses, and various olympic lifts.  If you can go heavier, do so.
10.) Do not skip workouts.
11.) If you feel like your getting too fat and decide that you want to cut back a little bit, smack yourself in the face go eat a jar of peanut butter, then go squat.

These are my rules on how to build maximum muscle in the shortest amount of time.  You can agree or disagree, but they are my rules so you are not allowed to change them.

lol now that seems like a fun bulk. i think if ur older that would apply because theres less pressure to be thin so if u get a little heavy its ok and u can cut down later. as a teen i dont think it works so much for an endomorph however i think the ecto's on here who can't seem to gain weight would definitely benefit from this.

looks good i agree on almost all of those

perhaps add in:
12) do not cheat yourself on lifts, practice good form...ie squats below parallel, deadlifts re-set each rep, ohp to chest not bottom of chin, etc.
13)sleep like a baby and then some

bulking/strength training

soon to begin bill starr's 5X5

current maxes:
squats: 255
deadlifts: 300
bench: 185
oh press: 125
goals for jan 1:

Good points Edrice.  I agree 100%, but the rules have already been established, so I can not add or remove anything from the list.

Haha, this does not apply to me at all. However, great bulking strategy. Nice post Brihead.

Actually, I did start out by "clean bulking".  That was actually the same point in time where I started to add squats and deadlifts into my training, rather then just focusing on all upper body stuff and leg machines, therefore I got some great noobie gains (not necessarily noob gains, but new to squats and deadlifts - the real mass builders).

After about 3 months of "clean bulking", I decided to cut some of the fat off for a month, and I ended up looking kind of ripped.

After that I started following these bulking rules.  It was actually about 4 months that I have been doing it for.  This is also the same time I started doing strength training routines.  The first one was from the NROL program.  Well, I'll tell ya the gains that I've got in the last 4 months have been MUCH better then the initial noobie gains that I got when I started NROL.  Every single day people say that I'm getting really huge, but I'm not even nearly fat.  I have a little fat on the gut, but nothing abnormal to a bulk.  I'd say maybe 15 - 17% bf.

On top of that, I've been following Mark Rippetoe's routine for the last month where you squat every workout, and you add weight to the bar every workout.  The SIZE gains from this routine are just ridiculously unbelieveable.  My Dad actually told me that he thought that I'm getting fat the other day, while I was wearing a hoodie, but I showed him that I really didn't have a gut, and he was like "WOW, you're just getting really built, what the hell are you doing???"  I told him.

People say stuff like that to me all the time.  I was in a snowboard shop yesterday, getting fitted for a new snowboard.  The guy was like, "What do you weigh? Like 170?  175?"

I told him, "Just over 200 lbs.".  He told me that I didn't look like I weighed that much, and he didn't quite believe me, but I told him to fit me for that weight anyway because that's what I weigh.

Point being, I attribute everything I've gained in size and strength to following these bulk rules, squats, deadlifts, overhead presses, etc..., and lots of hard work.

alright thats cool.

this isn't to un motivate u or anything but does it bother u that people think ur getting fat? cause u mentioned that ppl are telling u ur getting huge, do they mean with fat too? and so far u've said ur sister and dad both thought u were getting fat.

again, im not trying to bring u down at all im just trying to see it from ur point of view b/c personally i would be upset if some1 thought i looked fat even if my bf% really hadn't changed.

Sounds like a great set of rules, I did that when I was bulking minus the squats because of my ligament injury.

Well, most people assume that when you get bigger that you are getting fatter.  This is simply due to the fact that it is usually true.  Most people don't do jack s***, and they eat nothing but crap and don't exercise, so they start getting fat.  It's actually abnormal for someone to get bigger and gain muscular weight (when compared to most other people, but we all know that on this forum.).   I'm getting wider in the shoulders and chest, so they assume that I'm just getting fat like everyone else (who also gets wider in the shoulders and chest)

When someone sees me with my shirt off, like my girl, they know that I'm definately not getting fat.  She tells me that whatever I'm doing, keep doing it.  She's also amazed at how much LESS fat I am then I was when I weighed 165 lbs.

It's just a sad fact here in America that it's the norm to get bigger and fatter.  It's fairly uncommon for someone to just get bigger.

That's the thing.  I don't look 'fat' though.  I just look much bigger then my old, skinny self 8 months ago.  Some people just assume that I just got fat over the last 8 months.  They have no idea that I've been lifing my ass off for the all that time.  When they see my arms, back, or legs then they realize that I've packed on 40 + lbs. of muscle in that time.

thats cool, what about ur face? jw cause one way u can notice ppl gain fat is when their faces are more round in general and its fairly easy to tell. has there been significant "rounding"/weight gain in ur face?

Lol, you really are worried about that face thing.  I guess you could say that I gained a little bit in my face, but not much.  I really wish I had a 'before' pic, because I looked very unhealthy because of how bony I was, and yes, my face looked a little bit bonier too.

Now, I just look much bigger and healthier, not some skinny, bony, little punk.

Maybe tommorow I'll take a pic with my new camera and post it up here.
