Brain Fog on Keto? - Tuesday, September 22, 2009 7:00 AM ( #1 )
I returned to this forum after a break of almost two years and after reading all the posts by RS and others, have decided to give Keto a try.

I am 5’11 and weigh 151 lbs with about 12% bf. So I am not really fat (RS might think differently) but have these annoying love handles which I have had all my life. I hoping to hit them hard with Keto ;-)

I am reading as much as I can read about Keto and have a few questions around the popular posts on Keto on this forum:

Initial brain fog – For people who experienced mental sluggishness for the first couple of weeks, how bad did it get. I work in financial consulting and would pretty much loose my job if I sound like an imbecile for a week. Any tips on how to best reduce it.

Bad breath on Keto – How does one take care of this? You can’t take mints – so is it sugar free gum all the way.

Most posts on the carb up days talk about a lot eating a lot of simple carbs. Is that essential? Can I carb up with complex carbs like whole wheat pasta, multi grain bread, brown rice etc. or would the fibre content in these foods make it harder to take in the recommended amount of carbs. I can take in maltodextrin, gatorade etc. to notch up the carb intake.

Did anybody try pshylium husk while on Keto to maintain the fiber intake. I think it is great thing for fiber but one might fart like a foghorn.

The title of the book by Mauro Di Pasquale – is it “The Anabolic Diet”? He seems to have a few books with the term anabolic in the title. I just want to confirm before I pick one up.

Thanks for all the wonderful posts guys. I plan to start my Keto diet this Saturday. Can’t wait.

i experienced the sluggishness for the first two days.  it really comes down to how your body handles the switch over to using fat as its inital energy source over carbs.

How bad was the sluggishness? Did it stop you from doing your everyday job.

I have seen a few girls get on stuff like lemon diet etc. and then end up sleeping 14 hrs a day because they have no energy left whatsoever.

I know I might sound a bit overtly concerned but I am just a bit worried about how much is it likely to slow me down at work, if at all.

Brain fog should really only last a day or two about 4-5 days in and maybe 3-4 days in the second week if you carb within the first week of starting the diet.  I dont remember ever having a problem with this actually, it was more just tiredness and I didn't really want to do anything physical.  I could still get myself to lift but couldnt find the energy to play basketball.

You really should simple carbs for at least the first meal and probably the second meal because you wanna kick start glycogen resynthesis.  Its like after your workout how they say high gi carbs are better because they absorb quickly and refuel glycogen.  After that, switch to more complex carbs.

As for keto breath...I never had much of a problem either but I always do these things to prevent it anyway.

1:  Carry a water bottle with you everywhere you go, more frequent hydration is necessary because the diet is diuetic.  Dryness causes bad breath.
2: Brush your teeth and floss before bed.  That morning breath you get will be even worse on keto if you dont clean up your mouth before bed.
3:  I even leave water by my bedside for if I wake up in the middle of the night.

basically stay hydrated.  sugar free mints wouldnt hurt but i dont use them.

brain fog is from your body not getting enough carbohydrates for proper brain function.

More Study Needed

Australian research scientist Grant D. Brinkworth, PhD, tells WebMD that the findings, while intriguing, do not prove that low-carbohydrate weight loss diets affect memory.
In a study published in 2007, Brinkworth and colleagues performed cognitive function testing on dieters after they had been on either a low-carb or high-carb weight-loss diet for eight weeks.
Both groups lost weight and showed improvements in mood.
The low-carbohydrate dieters showed slight impairments in cognitive processing speed, but no difference was recorded between the two groups in working memory.
Brinkworth says if eliminating carbohydrates from the diet does affect memory, the effect may only be temporary.
"What (Taylor and colleagues) recorded may be an acute, transient effect that may just be the body readjusting to an unfamiliar diet," he says. "We really need studies that examine the long-term impact of these diets on cognition."
Calls to a representative from the private equity firm North Castle Partners, which owns controlling interest in Atkins Nutritional Holdings, were not immediately returned.
