Boxing - Wednesday, August 12, 2009 4:05 AM ( #1 )
Hi All,

This might be a silly thing to ask but I am looking at getting a puch bag in my garage soon along with possible joining up with a boxing club but I was just wondering if puching a bag will help add muscle as I understand the concept of punching it to make your muscles work harder and also it gives you a good workout too but I was wondering if there are any benifits in muslce growth by punching a bag?

Any help on this would be great as I am looking for other excerises to do other than lifts weights to get a good workout but also to help increase muscle size by alternating what I am doing aswell.

If you do gain muscle, it would be a first !

Punching is mostly a cardio exercise which won't lead to muscle grow.
You'll need to add some other exercises inorder to gain mass. Sorry !

Thats fine as I thought it wouldnt help increase muscle size as such.
Would boxing help though in my overall development or would I be wasting my time as I am looking to increase muscle size but also im looking to do cardio to help shift a little excess weight from my sides.

boxing is mainly a cardio, but it will improve ur upper body muscle endurance too.
it wont harm your lifting anyway

It's good cardio.  I will cause soreness in your back and shoulders, and possibly even legs too.  I wouldn't count on it as a means to build muscle though.  Nothing does that better then weights.

If you do not want to use weights, you need to find other ways to put increasing amounts of tension on the muscles. You could build a little gym in your garage for close to nothing.
Just think of exercises you could do and what you'll need for them, like pull ups working to one handed, maybe even weighted one handed. So you need something to pull up on. Make a sandbag that will last. Use it for deadlifting, variations of squats, cleans etc. Work to one legged (pistol squats) to get more tension on the legs. Things like these and boxing together will make you into a rock.

Thanks for the idea's.

I did hear that getting a sandbag could be useful in weight exercises so might be worth a go.
I dont mind lifting weights as I do enjoy my weight sessions I was just wondering if there were any other things I could do that builds the muscle other than just lifting weights all the time so I can challange my bidy and keep it guessing etc.

Thanks for the advance so far.

I started boxing 2 weeks ago as a supplement for off days/ cardio days. Its mainly to cut and im not worried about loseing a little size. Its only once a week but its different which helps keep the muscles guessing.

I would do about a month or two of a set weight program then switch to something different for a month or two then switch back or do something different again. Ive noticed gains in strength and size doing my lifting routines on 2 month cycles. Also every now and then I do a lighter week with higher reps and its actually the toughest week out of my lifting. Try that out its nuts.
Sometimes you just gotta go out there and get it done, You know.. Give Er

That sounds interesting migth have to give that a go. I am keen on the boxing idea as it would be a good form of a different cardio workout for me.
